Class Notes 2008
Class of 1949
John W. Severinghaus was recently honored with the renaming of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Plenary Lecture on Translational Science. This lecture has been delivered at the ASA annual meetings since 2004, and beginning in 2008, it will be called the John W. Severinghaus Lecture on Translational Science in recognition of his contributions to medical science. Dr. Severinghaus will deliver his namesake lecture at the ASA meeting in Orlando on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. in the Orange County Convention Center. His lecture is titled "Gadgeteering for Healthcare." |
Class of 1954
In June 2008 the Columbia University Medical Center paid tribute to Anneliese L. Sitarz, professor emeritus of clinical pediatrics. More than 100 faculty, friends, and grateful families gathered to thank Anneliese for her dedication to the Division of Pediatric Hematology – Oncology and the University as well as the countless young patients she served during a career that spanned 53 years. The celebration included an announcement by P. Roy Vagelos’54, Chairman of the Board of Visitors, that an endowed scholarship fund has been established by several alumni of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in her honor. John N. Schullinger’55, professor emeritus of clinical surgery, presented the keynote remarks in honor of his colleague and longtime friend. |
Class of 1958
Jules White recently endowed a scholarship in his wife’s name at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The Anita M. White Endowment will honor a graduating dietetic intern each year who personifies the ideals of the profession. In 1958, Yale-New Haven Hospital established one of the first dietetic internships in the country. The one-year internship prepares students to become registered dietitians. Each year, the program accepts a class of 12 interns who will pursue careers in health care, business and industry, academia, government agencies and the media after graduation. |
Class of 1984
Arnon Krongrad, founder and medical director of the Krongrad Institute for Minimally Invasive Prostate Cancer Surgery, recently co-founded The New Prostate Cancer InfoLink and Social Network. Using blogs, syndication and social networks similar to Facebook, Dr. Krongrad and Mike Scott, a principal at Vox Medica, a health communications firm, created a Web site that encourages discussion about the implications of prostate cancer. Members include doctors, patients, wives, ministers, government officials – anyone with an interest in prostate cancer. |
Class of 1988
James M. Markert professor and division director, department of surgery, division of neurosurgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), was named the James Garber Galbraith Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery at UAB. Markert has made major contributions to the field of neurology with his work with malignant glioma, taking a laboratory discovery he made into a clinical trial, the results of which may dramatically alter the outlook for patients with malignant glioma. Dr. Markert is also co-director of the UAB Brain SPORE, a $13 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop new therapies to treat brain cancer. |

Class of 1943.
Works by the Polish painter Jan Lebenstein, from the collection of the late Dr. Albert W. Grokoest, were displayed at the JKK Fine Arts Gallery in Upper Montclair, NJ during May 2006. Dr. Grokoest, a firm believer in the power of art and friendship in medical healing, was a close friend of Lebenstein and many other figures in the art world. As chairman of the Henry Nias Foundation, Stanley Edelman has facilitated the creation of scholarships and fellowships for medical education, including $900,000 for Mount Sinai Hospital over the past 30some years. Dr. Edelman is assistant clinical professor of surgery at Mount Sinai. He contributes both personally and as chairman of the Nias Foundation to other cultural and social service organizations, such as the 92nd Street Y, the New York Philharmonic and City Opera, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Internist J. Putnam Brodsky has officially retired from practice but as of May 2005 was working two days a week at his local hospital near Shrewsbury, NJ, as a physician’s adviser.

Michael Schachter runs the Schachter Center for Complementary Medicine in Rockland, NY, using complementary, alternative, and integrative therapies. He participates in the NIHsponsored Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT).

Dartmouth College awarded Karen Kramer Hein the Lester B. Granger’18 Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award is given to a Dartmouth graduate who has shown a longterm commitment to public service and social justice. Dr. Hein, a graduate Dartmouth’s medical program and Columbia’s medical school, is a specialist in adolescent medicine, dealing particularly with HIV/AIDS. From 1998 to 2003, Dr. Hein was president of the William T. Grant Foundation, which funds research and programs pertaining to the wellbeing of youth. She is professor of epidemiology and population health and of clinical pediatrics at Albert EInstitute ein College of Medicine.

After retiring as a primary care/family practice physician in Minnesota, Robert Titzler began volunteer service to underserved and impoverished areas of the United States and around the world. He provided care to victims of Hurricane Katrina in and around Biloxi, Miss.

David P. Roye Jr., the St. Giles Foundation Professor of Clinical Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at P&S, led a 26member team to China to perform operations on disabled orphans in 2006. Dr. Roye is medical director of the Children of China Pediatrics Foundation.

As the executive director of Beth Israel Medical Center’s Continuum Center for Health & Healing, Woodson Merrell has led the creation of the nation’s largest center for comprehensive integrated medicine. The center concentrates on lifestyleoriented treatment and prevention, incorporating alternative and complementary medicine. Dr. Merrell has a particular interest in the center’s work with mindbody treatments (especially East Asian meditation), acupuncture, nutrition systems, and indigenous healing techniques.

In June 2003, Towers Perrin, an international management consulting firm, elected Alan Spiro as a principal. Dr. Spiro has worked for Towers Perrin since January of 1998 as a consultant in the management of employee health services and medical benefits. Dr. Spiro holds an MBA from Northwestern University. He has been involved for the past 20 years in researching and analyzing healthcare data.

Joel Chodos is a gastrointestinal specialist in Delaware. His practice concentrates on colon cancer prevention, colon polyp removal, heartburn problems, stomach germ and ulcer disease.
Ophthalmologist Jeffrey P. Gilbard has begun marketing a dry eye treatment developed by his company, Advanced Vision Research. TheraTears is an expansive line of pharmaceuticals including several varieties of eyedrops and gels, contact lens solution, a nutritional supplement, and eyelid cleanser. Besides being founder and CEO of Advanced Vision Research, Dr. Gilbard is clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.
Orthopedic Surgeon Ronald Grelsamer had two books named to the 2005 Wall Street Journal Summer Reading (Health) List; “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Knee Pain and Surgery” and “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery.” Dr. Grelsamer launched an awareness campaign about ACL injury in young women, saying that the disproportionate amount of ACL injuries among the 15 to 25yearold female demographic can be reduced with education about athletic training and posture.
Franklin C. Lowe is the chairman of the Complementary & Alternative Medicine Committee of the American Urological Association. He practices at St. Luke’sRoosevelt Hospital Center.

In the Aug. 12, 2004, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Christopher Freyberg was listed as part of a large team of cooperating investigators and researchers in the Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Trial. The article found that the number of survivors of outofhospital cardiac arrest can be significantly raised when the public is properly trained in CPR and the use of AED devices. Dr. Freyberg is with Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Elaine Abrams, professor of pediatrics and epidemiology at Columbia, is chairing the primary therapy committee of International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials.

Class of 1984
Dr. Arnon Krongrad, founder of the Krongrad Institute itute, gave a presentation at the 2006 World Congress of Endourology. The Krongrad Institute itute focuses on laproscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP), a minimally invasive surgical treatment for prostate cancer, which Dr. Krongrad has found in his trials to offer a more complete recovery of continence and erectile function in patients, compared with open prostate surgery. Dr. Krongrad reported that LRP patients made an almost complete recovery between two and three years after undergoing the procedure. The Krongrad Institute itute is the world’s only private program devoted to the LRP procedure.

EleCenterophysiologist Frederick Ehlert has become associate clinical professor of medicine in the cardiology division at P&S. He moved uptown from his former position at St. Luke’sRoosevelt Hospital Center.

Novasys Medical has hired endosurgeon Charles Carignan as chief medical officer and vice president, business development, clinical and regulatory affairs. Dr. Carignan will oversee the trial and development of new medical products, and will further act as a strategic executive and business analyst. Novasys is currently working on products for urinary incontinence.
Rosemary Sampogna has been appointed Institute ructor in clinical medicine, nephrology division, at P&S. She received a Ph.D. from Columbia in biochemistry and biophysics before receiving her medical degree. She will be working with Qais AlAwqati on the characteristics of stem cells in the adult kidney.

New York Women’s Health is the name of Katarina Eisinger’s ob/gyn practice based at CUMC. At the end of April 2007, she opened an annex to that practice in Orangeburg, N.Y., in Rockland County.

Ogan Gurel is chairman of Aesis Research Group, LLC, a research and consultancy group for health and life sciences investment. Dr. Gurel was previously CEO of Duravest, a strategic investment company in the biomedical technology sector.
Amy Morishima had her third child, a boy named Robert Yuzuru McLeod, on June 6, 2007. He joins big sisters Mary (age 5 when Dr. Morishima wrote in July) and Kelly (age 2). Mary starts kindergarten in August. The family lives in San Jose, Calif. “Although we have lots of family here, we do miss our friends,” writes Dr. Morishima. “Bill loves his job as a semiconductor process engineer for Linear Technology Corporation. I've been working four days a week at a family practice group nearby.”

Dr. Raul Zambrano joined the staff at Hudson River Health Care in September 2006, working with the financially disadvantaged and medically underserved patients at the Walden and Goshen centers in New York State. Dr. Zambrano also goes on periodic deployment with the U.S. Army, first in a hospital in Wurzberg, Germany, and then at Fort Dix, N.J., to treat wounded Iraq war veterans.

Following completion of a nephrology fellowship at CUMC, Geoffrey Dube was appointed an Institute ructor in clinical medicine in Columbia’s nephrology division. He is working in the transplant section.
AnneMarie Wills was awarded the 2007 AAN Foundation/ALS Clinician Scientist Development Fellowship by the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Wills has conducted research on the gene Paraoxonase 1, which increases the risk of developing ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and has proposed further research involving studying the byproducts of the gene’s activity in blood, cerebral fluid, and spinal tissue.

Having completed her residency in ob/gyn at P&S, Linda L. Fan has been appointed assistant clinical professor at P&S.
Allison G. Hays, a cardiology fellow at New York University Medical Center, was married at the end of April 2007 to Dr. Farooq Sheikh, whom she met during their internal medicine residencies at CUMC. Allison’s parents are both M.D.s on the CUMC faculty; Dr. Sheikh’s parents are also physicians.
