Bradley Peterson, MD, the Suzanne Crosby Murphy Professor of Child Psychiatry, has been named chief of the Division of Child Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
Joel Stein, MD, in September became chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at P&S, chief of the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, and director of the Rehabilitation Medical Service and physiatrist-in-chief at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Stein came to Columbia from Harvard Medical School and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
Honors
Carolyn Britton, MD, associate professor of clinical neurology, was installed as the 109th president of the National Medical Association (NMA) at a ceremony in Atlanta at the end of July. The NMA, founded in 1895, represents the interests of more than 30,000 African-American physicians and the patients they serve.
Wafaa El-Sadr, MD, MPH, professor of clinical epidemiology (Mailman), professor of clinical medicine (P&S), director of the Mailman School of Public Health’s International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP), and chief of infectious diseases at Harlem Hospital Center, was named one of 25 recipients of a MacArthur Fellowship (commonly called a “genius award”) for 2008 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Five physician-scientists in the Department of Pediatrics have been named John M. Driscoll, Jr., M.D. Children’s Fund Scholars. The fund, created in the department in 2005, was made possible by donors who responded to retired chairman Dr. Driscoll’s appeal for funds to support junior physician-scientists in their pediatrics research. The junior faculty, who will receive stipends for up to two years are Wendy Chung, MD, PhD, Herbert Irving Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (in Medicine); Kara Gross, MD, assistant professor of clinical pediatrics gastroenterology and nutrition; Adam Ratner, MD, MPH, assistant professor of pediatrics and microbiology; Maria-Luisa Sulis, MD, assistant professor of clinical pediatrics oncology; and Kimara Targoff, MD, instructor in pediatrics cardiology.
