Medical Center Neighborhood Fund Goal: To raise money for northern Manhattan nonprofits. Created by CUMC, NYPH, and the New York State Psychiatric Institute to enhance the quality of life in the Washington Heights/Inwood community. The Fund currently makes more than 60 awards to local organizations. NYPH-CUMC Mentoring Program Goal: To mentor young people interested in learning about health care. Joint effort of CUMC, NYPH, the Community League of the Heights and Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. The program matches 6th and 7th graders from the Community Health Academy of the Heights with hospital and medical center employees and students. America Reads Program Goal: To improve students’ reading skills. Medical, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and dental students tutor elementary school students for three hours every Saturday. SPECIAL EVENTS Annual Food Drive Every year CUMC sponsors the Fresh Youth Initiatives Helping Hands Food Drive, New York’s only youth-run food pantry. Young people distribute about 80,000 pounds of food every year. Volunteers needed. Annual Toy Drive Government & Community Affairs coordinates an annual toy drive. CUMC employees donate hundreds of toys that are distributed to local day care and head start programs. Morningside Campus One-to-One Tutoring Volunteer tutors are matched with neighborhood children and focus on the specific academic needs of each child. Volunteers tutor during the week at P.S. 145 on 105th Street or on Saturday mornings at the Morningside campus. Eligibility is determined by application to Community Impact.
