South African University Honors Stein and Susser

 

Coat of arms of the medical school of the University of Witwatersrand, South AfricaThe medical school of the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, awarded 75th Jubilee Medals to alumni Zena Stein, M.D., and Mervyn Susser, M.D., in recognition of their professional achievements.

Susser, the recently retired editor of The American Journal of Public Health, is Gertrude H. Sergievsky Professor Emeritus of Epidemiology, former director of the Sergievsky Center, Faculty of Medicine, Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons, and former professor and head of the Division of Epidemiology, School of Public Health. Stein is professor emerita of psychiatry and public health (epidemiology), former acting head of the Division of Epidemiology, and former associate dean of research and academic affairs at CSPH. She is an expert on prevention of AIDS in women and on the prevention of mental retardation. The couple has three children.
