Mutations Not Inherited from Parents Cause More than Half the Cases of Schizophrenia

Many cases of schizophrenia occur in families with no history of the disease.
Rare protein-altering genetic mutations contribute to these cases.
Researchers expect to find perhaps hundreds more of such mutations—a necessary step toward understanding how the disease develops.
