Configure Columbia Email in a Mobile Device

Instructions below are to set up an @columbia.edu email account on an iPhone or iPad, or Android device.
If you have an Exchange (@cumc.columbia.edu) account please see instructions for Exchange on iPhone/iPad or Exchange on Android.

IMPORTANT: Make sure any devices or equipment that connect to your institutional email have a passcode and encryption set. See the Smartphone and Tablet Encryption and Security page for instructions.

Configure Columbia Email on an iPhone or iPad
  1. From the main screen select the Settings icon.
  2. Select the link for Mail, Contacts, Calendar.
  3. Select Add Account.
  4. Select Other from the list of account types.
  5. For Add New Account enter the following:
    • Name: your full name as you want it to appear on outgoing messages
    • Address: youruni@columbia.edu, using your own Columbia UNI instead of youruni.
    • Password: your UNI password
    • Description: Columbia IMAP
  6. iDevice Server Settings
  7. Tap Next in the upper right.
  8. In the next screen, IMAP should be selected by default. Enter the following:
      Incoming Mail Server
    • Host Name: mail.columbia.edu
    • User Name: your UNI
    • Password: your UNI's password
      Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
    • Host Name: send.columbia.edu
    • User Name: your UNI
    • Password: your UNI's password
  9. Select Save, then exit the Mail settings. Your iPhone/iPad will connect to your Columbia email and show current messages.
Configure Columbia Email on an Android Device
Please note that instructions may vary based on your individual device's hardware and the version of Android it is using. For additional assistance see your device's help manual or instructions on the manufacturer's website for email set up.
  1. Select the Mail or Email icon in your list of Apps.
  2. Tap the menu and select Add Account.
  3. Select Other.
  4. For Email address, type in your full Columbia address: youruni@columbia.edu (using your own UNI instead of youruni).
  5. Type your UNI's password into the Password field.
  6. Select Manual Setup (you may need to select Next first).
  7. Select Incoming Server/settings
  8. Select IMAP mail server from the drop down menu or Protocol
  9. Server: mail.columbia.edu
  10. Username: make sure this is just your UNI, not your full email address
  11. If there is a Security Type option, select SSL and make sure Server Port is 993, or tap on Advanced Settings and select:
    • Port: 993
    • Check use secure connection
    • Use secure password (TLS): Auto
    • Uncheck verify certification
  12. Select Next or tap OK, then OK again
  13. Select Outgoing Server
  14. For SMTP server type in: send.columbia.edu
  15. Username: make sure this is just your UNI, not your full email address
  16. If there is a Security Type select SSL and make sure Server Port is 465, or tap on Advanced Settings and select:
    • Port: 465
    • Check use secure connection
    • Use secure password (TLS): Always
    • Authentication: Auto
    • Uncheck verify certificate
  17. Select Next and Finish Setup, or tap OK, then OK again to exit.
Your device should connect and show your Columbia email Inbox. Select Settings in the menu to adjust additional preferences such as sync times, notifications, signature and more.
