iPhone and iPod Touch - Connect to Athens or VPN
Apple's iPhone and iPod touch can connect to the campus wireless network, Athens, and securely from off campus using Cisco IPsec VPN gateways. VPN is only required to view some intranet sites, such as InfoNet, or other secured on campus resources. Please follow the instructions below carefully.
- Install the Enterprise Profile - required prior to using either Athens or VPN.
- Configure Athens - this is only required if you wish to connect your device to wireless while on campus.
- Configure VPN - this is only required if you wish to connect to secure resources while off campus.
Click here for a printable PDF version of these instructions.
Install the Enterprise Profile
- On your device, make sure you have an active network connection: 4G, 3G, Edge or an existing Wi-Fi network.
- Once your device is connected, visit the following URL from your device's Safari web browser:
http://cumc.columbia.edu/it/idevice/
- Select the link to Install the NYP-CUMC Enterprise Profile for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
- An Install Profile window for NYP Enterprise Connect will appear. Tap the Install button.

- A warning screen will appear; select Install Now to continue. If you have a Passcode lock set on your iPhone, you will be prompted to enter it.
- The iPhone will now prompt you for your Username and Password three times, once each for the following profiles:
- Wi-Fi network "athens"
- VPN (NYP Remote - East)
- VPN (NYP Remote - West)
Enter your Columbia UNI and its password each of the three times you are prompted. Those with only a hospital affiliation may use their NYP CWID and its password instead; this is the same logon that is used for WebCIS

- The Profile Installed window will appear when done. Select the More Details link to verify that the installation was successful.

You will see a Certificate listing for nyx.cpmc.columbia.edu.
- Tap the Profile Installed button in the upper left, then Done to exit.
- Press the device's Home button to exit Settings completely and return to your home screen.
- Select the Settings icon to go back into the iPhone's settings. You will notice that there is now an option for VPN listed below the Wi-Fi link. Continue the configuration instructions below to connect to Athens or VPN as desired.

Configure VPN and connect to secure resources from off campus
IMPORTANT! You cannot successfully test VPN if your device is connected to the Athens wireless campus network. Athens already provides a secured connection, so most resources will appear even if VPN is not working properly on your iPhone. Please follow the instructions below when you are off campus but connected via another Wi-Fi network, or via 3G, 4G or Edge.
- After having installed the Enterprise Profile, select the Settings button.
- Select the VPN option and make sure the VPN switch is set to ON (tap once if not), then verify that NYP Remote - West link is checked under Choose a Configuration... If not, tap to select.

- A VPN Connection login prompt will appear. Type in your Columbia UNI and your UNI's password, then select OK.

- The VPN Connection disclaimer window will appear. Select OK to accept the disclaimer conditions and connect to VPN.
- You will be returned to the Settings window. The VPN Status will read Connected and list the length of time for the current VPN session.
- Press the device's Home button to return to the main screen. To test VPN, launch the Safari web browser, enter the address http://infonet.nyp.org/ and hit Go. If you have successfully connected to VPN from off campus, you will be able to see the NYPH InfoNet intranet (secured) home page.
You will also notice a VPN icon in the upper left corner, next to the network status icon.
- To disconnect from VPN when done, go back into the Settings, select VPN and tap the VPN ON button so it slides to OFF.
