  VPN at CUMC
 

VPN - Cisco IPSec for Mac OS 10.7 and 10.6

The Macintosh Lion (10.7) and Snow Leopard (10.6) operating systems have Cisco IPSec VPN built in to their network settings, follow the instructions below to configure it to use with CUMC VPN.
It is also possible to use VPN via the NYP/CUMC SSL website and installing AnyConnect.

Configuring Cisco IPSec

  1. Select the Network icon in your computer's System Preferences (Apple main menu - System Preferences).

  2. Select the + (plus) sign in the lower left corner of the Network window. You may need to double-click on the padlock icon first and log in with your computer's administrative password in order to add a network interface.

  3. Use the drop down arrow to the right of the Interface field and select VPN.

  4. Use the drop down arrow to the right of the VPN Type field and select Cisco IPSec.

  5. Type CUMC VPN into the Service Name field, then select the Create button.

  6. Make sure that CUMC VPN is selected in the left column, if not click once on it to highlight. Type in the following:
    • Service Address: 156.111.224.55
    • Account Name: West Campus Remote Access
  7. Select the Authentication Settings... button.

  8. Make sure that the radio button to the left of the Shared Secret field is selected, then click here for the full Machine Authentication settings including the Shared Secret password. NOTE: accessing the authentication settings requires UNI login.

    Click the OK button when done, then Apply to save the settings. VPN is now configured on your computer.

Using Cisco IPSec VPN in Macintosh 10.7 and 10.6

  1. Open your Network settings from the Mac's System Preferences. If you were just following the configuration instructions above, this will already be open.
  2. Make sure CUMC VPN is highlighted in the left column (click on it once if not), then select the Connect button in the middle of the Network window.
  3. The VPN Connection window will appear. Clear out any information that is in the Account Name field and type in your Columbia UNI.
  4. In the Password field, type in the password used for your UNI. Select the OK button.

  5. Select OK again in the VPN Connection window that appears to finish connecting.
Disconnecting
  1. Open your Network settings from the Mac's System Preferences.
  2. Make sure CUMC VPN is highlighted in the left column (click on it once if not), then select the Disconnect button in the middle of the Network window.
TIP: If you'd like to see an icon for IPSec VPN in your Mac upper menu bar, check the option to Show VPN status in menu bar within the Network window (CUMC VPN must be highlighted in the left column). You can then use this icon to quickly connect and disconnect to VPN.
