How to Use Pharos

All public computing areas listed on the Computer Labs web site are connected to the Pharos printers.

You can quickly and easily configure your own computer to print to all of the Pharos printers with one installation. For instructions, please select the appropriate link for your operating system:

How to Print From Pharos

  1. Select Print as you normally would from within the software program you are using.
    • To print to ANY black and white Pharos printer on campus, select the CUMC_B&W queue. This is the default printer on all public computers.
    • Black and white Pharos printers print double-sided by default. To change or check your double-sided options before you print:
      • Windows - select the Properties button in the Print window, then the Printing Shortcuts tab and change the option under Print on both sides.
      • Macintosh - select File - Print and look for the Two-Sided option. You may need to change a drop-down menu from Preview to Layout to see more Two-Sided options.
    • To use the Color printers in the Hammer building, select the CUMC_Color queue. Color printers cannot print double-sided.
  2. After a moment, a Pharos popup window will appear on your computer’s screen prompting you to log in. Type in your UNI and select the Print button in the lower right.

The following instructions may vary depending on the type of Pharos printer you decide to use:
  • Pharos Touch Screen Printer - Pharos printers with a touch screen attached to the printer. This includes the Color printer.
  • Pharos Multi Function Printer - there are two multi function printers (MFP), one on the 2nd floor of the Hammer and one in the Library lobby, that use a smaller touch panel on the front of the printer itself to control printing. For details on using copying and scanning features at these printers, please see the Copying and Scanning page.
Pharos Touch Screen Printer:
  1. If the touch screen is idle, press it lightly with your finger to initiate printing.
  2. Use the on screen keyboard to type your Columbia UNI into the Login ID field, then press the blue Enter button.

If you are not sure what your Pharos password is please contact the CUMC IT Service Desk at extension 5-Help, option 5, or come to the Service Desk on the 2nd floor of the Hammer building.
  4. Your current print jobs will be listed. Touch the job you wish to print to highlight it, then select the Print button. You can also select the Print All button to print everything listed in your queue. Nothing is deducted from your quota until the job prints out.
