Student Residential (Wired) Network
All students living in residential housing on the Columbia University Medical Center campus have access to wired Ethernet network connections. Those who would like to use the wired network must follow the Steps Required to Get
Connected.
Overview
Bard Hall, Georgian, Tower I, Tower II, Tower III, 106 Haven, and 154 Haven are equipped with wired data ports that are part of the CUMC campus network. Students at these locations are able to connect a properly registered and configured computer to the high-speed campus network. Wireless access requires separate configuration and is only available at some areas on campus, please click here for a complete list of locations.
Both Macintosh and Windows public computers are available at several locations on the Medical Center campus, however most students will find connecting their own computers and accessing networked resources from their rooms to be more convenient.
Student routers, hubs, gaming and many other devices are NOT allowed on the network - please see our FAQ for details. Connecting any of these devices without proof of appropriate, prior approval can result in an instant loss of network connectivity.
Registration of student computers for the wired network is managed by a tool called the Bradford Campus Manager. For full details about the use of this tool at CUMC, please see our Bradford Policy page.
Steps Required to Get Connected
The following steps are for wired access by student owned computers in Residential housing only.
If you need to connect a department owned computer to the wired campus network, please click here.
- If you have not already, activate your Columbia UNI (email account).
- Verify that your computer has all of its current Operating System updates.
- Verify that your computer has working antivirus and antispyware installed, with all current definition updates.
- Submit the online Registration Form (also referred to as "Bradford", the tool that manages student wired access) using the computer that you want to connect to the wired network. Submitting the form requires that you provide basic contact information, then download and run a small, non-permanent program that will briefly scan your computer to verify that you have completed steps 2 and 3 above. For full details see How Does Bradford Campus Manager Work?
The registration form must be submitted using the computer you will be connecting to the wired network. You may:
- Submit the form before you arrive on campus, using your current Internet connection.
- If you are already on campus and in Bard Hall, Georgian 5th floor, or Tower 1 (after May 18th) but did not yet register, your computer should be directed to the registration form as soon as you plug into the wired network and open your web browser.
- If you are on campus using a laptop that has wireless, you should first configure your computer to connect to either of the secured wireless campus networks, Athens or Rome. Once you have connected to Athens or Rome, you can submit the Bradford registration form.
NOTE: The registration form cannot be reached if you are on the unsecured wireless network called "guest-net".
- If you are already on campus and want to register a computer that does not have a wireless card, please contact the CUMC IT Service Desk at extension 5-Help (212-305-4357), option 5.
NOTE: Please do not contact CUIT (the Morningside campus technical support) with questions or problems pertaining to connecting to the network from CUMC Residence Housing or other parts of the campus.
More information about the Residential Network can be found in these Student FAQs.
