The Pharos System

IMPORTANT - A recent upgrade to the Pharos printing system currently requires that any computers run an update to continue using Pharos. If you have not updated on your computer after December 29th, please uninstall any existing Pharos printers , then see the How to Use Pharos page for instructions on installing the updated version.

The Pharos system manages printers, copiers and scanners located in many common areas of the CUMC campus, including the CUMC IT Computer Labs and Health Sciences Library. Two of the printers are multi function, and can provide copying and scanning services in addition to printing. Anyone wanting to use Pharos must have:

  • A UNI - used to log in to the Pharos printer terminals and multi-function printers.
  • A Pharos page quota - used to track the number of prints or copies made from Pharos printers. Please see below for more information about quotas.

To use Pharos, you must first send a print job from a computer that is connected to the Pharos print queue. A pop up window will appear prompting you to enter your UNI account. You may then go to any Pharos printer on campus, log in with your UNI and select your print job(s) to print.

Please see the How to Use Pharos page for step by step instructions.

Pharos Locations
The public computers in areas listed on our Computer Labs web site are all connected to Pharos. You may also configure your own computer to print to Pharos, please see the top of the How to Use Pharos web site for instructions.

Here is a list of all Pharos printers on the CUMC campus.

Pharos Quotas

Semesterly quotas of 1000 Pharos pages are automatically given to active students and faculty. Students must be enrolled in a CUMC program and taking classes at CUMC during that semester to receive the quota.

Any faculty, staff and students with active UNI accounts who need additional pages can be purchase by at the cost of $.10 per black and white page or $.50 per page for color printing. Pages are sold in increments of $1.00.

Pages can be purchased at the CUMC IT Service Desk or Photocopy Center located on the 2nd floor of the Hammer building. These purchased pages remain on your account until they are used. IMPORTANT: any pages purchased online via the myUNI web site can only be used on the Morningside campus through the Ninja system. If you will not be printing at Morningside, please do not purchase pages via myUNI online!

Printing and copying are charged at the same rate. Scanning is a free service but does require a UNI login and that you are sending the scan to a columbia.edu email address only. Please see the Copying and Scanning page for full information.

Your current quota will appear on the Pharos terminal and MFP touch panel displays with the amount of pages remaining.

  • Black and White (CUMC BW) prints deduct 1 page from your quota, whether double and single sided. This equals 10 cents per purchased printed page.
  • Color (CUMC_Color) prints deduct 5 pages from your print quota. This is true of any pages that come out of the Color printer, whether color ink is used or not. This equals 50 cents from purchased pages.
NOTE: The color printer can only print single-sided.
Nothing is deducted from your print quota until you log into the Pharos printer and initiate the physical print job. Black and white Pharos printers print double-sided by default from the public computers. To print single-sided you must select advanced options when you are first sending the print job (File - Print - Properties or Layout options).

If a print job jams, the printer should automatically re-print at the same location once the jam has been cleared. Contact the Service Desk if a printer jams and you need assistance.

All print jobs that you have not yet printed will remain in the Pharos queue under your UNI for 24 hours. After 24 hours, print jobs expire and are removed from the queue.

Please see the links near the top left of this page for more information about Pharos and other CUMC related printing services.
