Configure Your Windows Computer for the Wired CUMC Network
All computers connecting to the CUMC network must be registered before they can connect. If you have not yet registered your computer, please see our Connecting to the Wired CUMC Network page for detailed instructions.
When your computer's registration has been processed, you will receive an email stating that we have completed your IP request for either Roaming (automatic/DHCP) or Static (manually configured). If your computer is not already configured for roaming, or you have been assigned a Static IP address, you will need to configure your computer's Local Area Network Connection.
Please follow the appropriate instructions to configure your computer:
If your computer's operating system is not listed here please contact the CUMC IT Service Desk at extension 5-Help for more information.
Roaming (DHCP) for Windows XP and 2000
Select the Start button in the lower left corner of your computer screen, then Control Panel (Windows 2000 computers may have to select Settings first), then Network and Internet Connections.
Select Network Connections.
Right click once on your Local Area Connection, then left click once on Properties.
The Local Area Connection Properties box will appear. In the middle of the box, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click on Internet Protocol once to highlight, then select the Properties button.
Select the radio dial for both of the following options:
Obtain an IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically
Note: If you have a specific IP address and other settings already entered in this window (for use at home or on another network that you will be using again) you may want to write down these settings. Changing to automatic IP and DNS addressing will immediately remove this information.
After entering the appropriate information in your Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, select the OK button in the lower right of the window to save the changes. Do not select the Cancel button, or all of the information you configured will be lost.
Restart your computer. You may have to allow up to 24 hours for the network connection to become active, as stated in your "Completed IP Request" email.
Static for Windows XP and 2000
Follow steps 1 through 4 above to access the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
Select the radio dial to Use the following IP address, and use the information you received in your "Completed IP Request - Static" email to configure the following fields:
IP address - be sure to use the exact IP address contained in the email you received. Using another IP address, that is not assigned to your system, can cause connectivity issues for your computer and others on the network, and is in violation of CUMC Network Policies.
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
Select the radio dial to Use the following DNS server addresses, and use the information from your email to configure the following fields:
Preferred DNS Server
Alternate DNS Server
Restart your computer. You may have to allow up to 24 hours for the network connection to become active, as stated in your "Completed IP Request" email.
CUMC Wired Network Tips:
Be sure your computer is securely plugged into a data port using a network (Cat 5) cable.
As indicated in the "Completed IP Request" email you receive, please allow up to 24 hours for your IP registration to replicate across the campus network, allowing you to connect.
If the connection stops working, either restart your computer or access your Network Connection again (steps 1 and 2), and select Repair from the menu that appears when you right-click on the Local Area Connections icon.
