The CUMC community has a large and growing Web presence. These sites are used for a variety of purposes, not least of which is marketing. In support of this, the WDS provides clients with the ability to choose their own Web site address (also known as domain name, URL, or vanity URL), and has created this guide to help our clients follow best practices for domain name creation and registration at Columbia University Medical Center.
To provide a secure campus network, CUMC is blocking default open access from the Internet in to the CUMC network, with some ports and protocols (SMTP and NetBIOS) blocked on outgoing. To permit legitimate institutional business functions a Firewall Exception Request can be submitted to the CUMC IT Network Security group.
The owner of the system requiring the exclusion must be a Director-level or above person, or a Department or Division Administrator (or a designated Departmental or Divisional System administrator), or a senior faculty member, and must be the person to submit the request.
This service can be requested, and is required, in order to install a new server on the network. The scan looks for known vulnerabilities and common misconfiguration errors that may lead to a server compromise.
Space is provided on the CUMC servers for your department or group's web site. This includes web serving, back up and fail over. This is a for-fee service, separate from the Personal Web Pages that are allowed via one's UNI account.
