Food Systems Workshop - Community of Practice III

Save the Date for our Community of Practice III, June 7 and 8, 2018! Registration will open in March, 2018.

All activities will be held at Columbia University Medical Center, Hammer Health Sciences Building, 701 West 168th Street, New York, NY 10032

Do you teach or want to teach about food systems using cross-disciplinary systems thinking at the graduate or undergraduate level and have materials you would like to further develop? If so, come join us as we develop a community of practice!

On June 7 & 8 we will gather for a full day of panels and presentations on existing work and lessons learned and a second day of active curriculum development.

The primary purposes of the event will be to 1) continue to create a community of practice of people working on developing and implementing curricula in food systems courses; 2) review and develop materials using systems thinking frameworks in teaching about food systems; and 3) share or develop assessment tools on student learning in systems thinking.

We hope to also share methods for effective interdisciplinary exploration of complex, interacting elements in food systems that include but are not limited to agriculture (agronomy), anthropology, biology, ecology, economics, environmental science, human geography, medicine, nutrition, public health and sociology.

During the workshop sessions, in addition to the workshops already proposed, a select group of individuals will bring curricular materials they are working on to engage with the community of practice with questions and suggestions in order to finalize the materials. All materials as part of these workshops will be available through open access to the communities once they are finalized. Curricular materials could be, as some examples, full curricula, individual courses, or exercises/case studies. Formats for the workshop sessions can vary, and may include knowledge cafes, structured networking, etc.
