In the Community
Community Outreach is an important aspect of the MS program. The goal is to provide evidence based nutrition information and resources to the array of health promotion programs currently being implemented by various divisions of the Columbia University Medical Center. Our contributions have provided the resource or complemented existing nutrition efforts of such programs as Project CLIMB’s Hike the Heights, workshops for the STEP (Science & Technology Entry Program) Program, and WAR (Women At Risk) Breast Cancer Support Group.
Beyond the Medical Center, Community Outreach has offered services as varied as conducting workshops in schools, partnering with the American Diabetes Association, and consulting with the Asian American Restaurant Association of New York City.
Project participation varies but it is always rewarding and enriching. As volunteers or for the thesis research projects, IHN students can gain experience in community-based nutrition services programs.
