The Columbia Genome Center
The Columbia Genome Center (CGC) is an interdisciplinary consortium of scientists dedicated to the generation of technology, information science, systems biology required to transform information from the genome to the study of biology and the practice of medicine.

Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
Computational scientists at the Center collaborate with colleagues in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biochemistry and Biology in hopes of transforming DNA and protein sequence data into biomedically relevant information, i.e.: protein structure, protein function, gene regulatory interactions, protein network interactions. Computational scientists will be in a position to study DNA sequence, functional motifs, gene expression patterns, phylogenetic relationships, super-computer simulations of complex biological networks, probabilistic models of potential upstream regulatory sequences, and other "genomic" targets.

Department of Genetics and Development
This department includes faculty who conduct basic research in several aspects of genetics and developmental biology, and in several model organisms as well as in humans. There is a strong focus on the use of model systems, including yeast, fly, chick, frog and mouse. Areas of research in these model organisms include: DNA recombination, repair and modification; cell cycle regulation; mechanisms of signal transduction and transcriptional regulation; growth control and pattern formation in the developing embryo; and murine models of human diseases. In addition, many of the faculty members work on aspects of human genetics and human disease, including cytogenetics, gene mapping, gene discovery and gene therapy. Current areas of research include cancer genetics, genetics of psychiatric, neurological, blood and skin diseases, and craniofacial defects.

Division of Statistical Genetics, School of Public Health
A new division has been established within the department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health, co-directed by Drs. David Greenberg and Susan Hodge. This group will assist in the design of human genetic and population genetic studies. They will work with other investigators to collect and analyze data (population, clinical, and genomic data) in the search for common disease genes.

Institute for Cancer Genetics
The mission of the Institute is to perform research on the pathogenesis of major human cancer types, with emphasis on identifying cancer-related genes that are altered in the germ-line (cancer predisposition syndromes) or in somatic cells. The Institute organizes the NIH-funded Postgraduate Training Program in 'Cancer Biology", which supports trainees and includes a course on "Cancer Biology and Genetics". This Institute introduced to the Columbia Health Sciences Campus a number of genetics-related technologies that are now used campus-wide. Members of the Institute have discovered a number of genes that are central to the pathogenesis of breast cancer, lymphoma, and prostate cancer.
