The nature of the consults range from benign hematology to solid tumor oncology. The most common malignancies are prostate, lung, head and neck, lymphoma and colon cancers. The fellow oversees the service Monday through Friday and works with one of the four attendings. The fellow also oversees participation of internal medicine residents and medical students. The second year rotation includes time in the outpatient clinic at the Bronx VA. Here, fellows see hematology and oncology patients with attending supervision. During the third year of fellowship, one fellow is selected from each class to remain at the Bronx VA for research. Successful research projects at the Bronx VA have utilized the large computerized patient records database for outcomes research with the mentorship of experienced epidemiologic researchers from CPMC.
