SEARLE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Internal Proposal Deadline - Monday, August 10, 2009

WHAT: The Searle Scholars Program makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in the first or second year of their first appointment at the assistant professor level, and whose current appointment is a tenure-track position. Candidates should have begun their first appointment as an independent investigator at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2008. The appointment must be a tenure-track position. The current grant level is $300,000 over a three-year period. Normally, the program makes 15 new grants each year.

PROGRAM EMPHASIS: Applicants for year 2010 awards will be expected to be pursuing independent research careers in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, and related areas in chemistry, medicine, and the biological sciences.

PLEASE NOTE: The Searle Scholars Program does not ordinarily support purely clinical research but has supported research programs that include both clinical and basic components. Potential applicants who are unsure if their research is appropriate for our Program are encouraged to examine the research interests of present and former Searle Scholars on this web site.

WHO: The following eligibility terms apply.

- Candidates must have begun their first appointment as an independent investigator at the assistant professor level on or after July 1, 2008.

- The appointment must be a tenure-track position.

WHEN: INTERNAL PROPOSAL DUE - MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 2009

Sponsor Proposal due - Friday, September 25, 2009

HOW: The internal proposal must include the following components.

- Cover Page with the candidate's contact information and title of the proposed research project

- Candidate's CV (2 page limit)

- Scientific Abstract (1 page limit)

- Project Proposal (4 page limit)

- Letter of Recommendation from Department Chair

INSTITUTIONAL LIMIT - FINAL, SPONSOR PROPOSALS: 2

The subject heading of the email should be "2010 Searle Scholars Program." Please PDF all items of the internal proposal to gcc19@columbia.edu with a cc: to mbt2122@columbia.edu by Monday, August 10, 2009.
