Lifting and Carrying

February 2016 Safety Topic

Improper lifting techniques are responsible for a large percentage of back injuries. Proper lifting and carrying methods offer protection against such injuries. Lifting and carrying is hazardous unless you use the right muscles.
Here are a few simple tips to reduce manual handling risks:

  • Use arm and leg muscles for lifting.
  • Warm up before lifting, and avoid over-straining.
  • Do not attempt to lift more than you can carry safely and without undue strain.
  • Call for help with heavy loads!

Remember to think about what you are going to do before picking up an object. Even when lifting light objects, safe-lifting techniques must become a habit.
