Postdoctoral Research Fellows and Scientists

Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) offers housing at both medical center and Morningside locations to full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellows and full-time Postdoctoral Research Scientists through a monthly lottery.


Eligibility Guidelines


  1. Only full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellows and full-time Postdoctoral Research Scientists are eligible. Postdoctoral Clinical Fellows are ineligible for Columbia University housing.
  2. Postdocs are limited to Columbia University housing for a period of either five years or the duration of their postdoctoral appointment, whichever is shorter. This includes all the time that a postdoc may have been employed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Postdoctoral Research Scientist in any Columbia University division.
  3. If a change in position occurs within the five-year housing limit, to a non-postdoctoral title that is still eligible for University housing, the tenant will be allowed to remain in University Housing for either one year or the original maximum of five years, whichever is shorter.
  4. Postdocs who become ineligible for housing due to a change from a full-time to a part-time appointment or to an ineligible title will not have their lease renewed; they will have a three-month grace period to either find alternate off-campus housing or return to work full-time with an eligible title. During this three-month period, the tenant will continue to pay rent at the same rate.

Housing Lottery

On the 15th of each month, the housing lottery is held. Current postdocs and new postdocs with a start date no more than six weeks after the lottery can participate. Studio apartments will be offered to postdocs with "single" status and 1-bedroom apartments will be offered to postdocs who are either married or in a domestic partnership

Interested in applying? Submit your completed application, along with a letter from your Departmental Administrator or Sponsor, that lists your title and appointment dates. These must both be submitted to the Office of Housing Services to be considered for the housing lottery.

Housing will be allocated based upon the current address of the applicant, in this order:

  1. First preference will go to incoming postdocs who are international, and to incoming postdocs who must vacate their current CUMC housing.
  2. Second preference will go to incoming and current postdocs who live within commuting distance of CUMC but do not live in Manhattan.
  3. Third preference will go to incoming and current postdocs already living in Manhattan.
  4. Fourth preference will go to Postdocs currently living in CUMC housing who wish a transfer from once campus to the other.

Our Housing Leasing Manager will email each of lottery winners in order of their selection to inform them of the Housing Assignment. Each postdoc must then respond to the email within 48 hours to make arrangements to view the available apartment(s). If they do not, they forfeit the right to be housed at that time.

Housing may be available at the medical center in 390 Fort Washington Ave. and/or at various locations throughout the Morningside campus, and applicants can choose the location based on their lottery ranking and room availability.

Each applicant will, in order of the selection, be offered housing based on current availability. Each applicant can choose from the remaining apartments. If an applicant declines an apartment, he or she may choose to remain in the lottery for one month.

Medical Campus Monthly Rates (2016-2017)

  • Studios (furnished with Full-size Murphy Bed): $1,476.00–$1,725.88
  • One Bedroom (unfurnished): $1,892.86–2,221.00

The rates for the above units do not include gas or electricity. Wi-Fi is available and provided by CUMC IT for no additional cost.
