Biography |
| Elizabeth M.C. Hillman, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology. Dr. Hillman received her PhD in medical physics and bioengineering at University College London, London, UK, and did her post-doctoral research in the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA . Dr. Hillman has received grant support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute (NHLBI), and National Cancer Institute (NCI), as well as the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation and the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP). Her research focuses on the development of novel optical imaging tools for in-vivo measurement of tissue function. These techniques include high-resolution, depth resolved spectroscopic imaging of superficial tissues, with extensions to endoscopic, laparoscopic or intrasurgical imaging of internal tissues. She is also developing novel microscopy tools such as in-vivo two-photon microscopy for in-vivo imaging of function at a cellular level. Dr Hillman is pursuing clinical translation of these techniques, and is currently developing a system for dermal imaging (mapping and staging skin cancer margins). She is also actively applying these tools for preclinical research in the areas of neuroscience (imaging exposed brain in-vivo to explore the relationship between blood flow and neuronal activity), cardiac imaging (studying the effects of ischemia on normal electrical propagation) and is also developing advanced methods for small animal molecular imaging (to assist in the development of clinical molecular probes, and for basic disease research). |
