The Joseph A. Thomas Medical intensive Care unit (MICU) is located on 5 Hudson South of the Milstein Hospital Building. The MICU is an 18 bed unit structured to provide cutting-edge, technologically advanced critical care services to patients with life threatening diseases. Each year the MICU cares for more than 1100 patients who are brought to the MICU from the Milstein Hospital, the Washington Heights neighborhood via the Emergency Department or are transferred from hospitals throughout the New York city metropolitan area.

The mission of the MICU is to provide outstanding care for critically ill patients, conduct clinical research in the realm of critical care medicine, and to educate the internists and critical care physicians of tomorrow.

The MICU is staffed by board certified intensivists and pulmonary and critical care fellows who work closely with medical housestaff. Nursing care is provided by extremely experienced and dedicated nurses who are specifically trained and certified to work with critically ill patients. The MICU is also staffed by critical care  PharmD, a nutritionist, and a social worker. The coordinated efforts of this multi-disciplinary group allows for the care of extremely complex patients who can not be treated on general medical floors.
