Research Interests
Dr. Factor's work centers on
the molecular mechanisms responsible for pulmonary edema clearance. These
studies are focused on understanding the how ion transport proteins in the
alveolar epithelium are regulated and how they are affected by acute lung
injury. In particular Dr. Factor is interested in how the ß2-adrenergic
receptor interacts with key epithelial solute transport proteins and how this
membrane bound receptor is regulated in lung epithelial cells.
Dr. Factor is also pursuing
studies into how ß2-adrenergic receptors in bronchial epithelial cells
interact with airway smooth muscle cells to cause bronchodilation.
Included in Dr. Factor’s studies is the development of novel gene transfer
strategies to increase the lung’s ability to clear pulmonary edema in the
setting of acute lung injury and to attenuate airway reactivity. The goals
are being approached through the use of adenoviral gene transfer for purposes
of augmenting the function of ß2-adrenergic receptors and Na,K-ATPases in lung epithelial cells.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Factor’s clinical
research interests include the treatment of acute lung injury and prevention
of complications of mechanical ventilation.
