The Major Clinical Year will begin in January of what formerly coincided with the 2nd year.
12-Week blocks of paired rotations
Four 12 week blocks, each with a pair of two related clerkships: Ob/Gyn and Pediatrics, Family Medicine and Surgery, Neurology and Psychiatry, and Internal Medicine and Surgical Subspecialties. These paired rotations will provide a more coordinated, interdisciplinary approach to clinical medicine, with opportunities to bridge specialties for integrated learning and comprehensive patient care, while balancing surgical and cognitive disciplines throughout each student’s year-long program.
Intersessions
One-week intersessions between blocks of rotations allow students to explore advanced topics in medicine, further address humanism and professionalism from the clinical setting and provide time for scholarly projects, including exploration of topics that may form the basis for their major
Scholarly Project requirement in the postclinical period. The intersessions will provide the opportunity to address introductory material before embarking on individual clerkships and offer in-depth review of clinical and basic science topics best addressed after the student has begun seeing patients.
Dual Degrees
Columbia offers two dual-degree programs that students can apply for during their medical training: the M.D./M.B.A. and the M.D./M.P.H. degrees. (We also offer an M.D./Ph.D. program, but students must apply to this program at the beginning of their medical education.) These dual-degree programs confer the second degree in an abbreviated time—one additional year of study, instead of 18 months to two years. In general, students interested in pursuing a dual degree apply immediately before their Major Clinical period, and will leave medical school for a year after the Major Clinical period to complete the dual degree reguirements.
