- Research that is not listed in the catalogue is XX950. For example, Immunology Research is IM950 and Dermatology Research is DR950.
- All away electives have the code number of 700. For example, Pediatrics Away is PE700 and OB/GYN Away is OB700.
INFORMATION ON REQUIREMENTS FOR FOURTH YEAR COLUMBIA P&S STUDENTS
- Elective Requirements. Columbia P&S students are required to complete eight electives, two of which are mandatory. These are:
- An intensive advanced clinical clerkship/sub-internship, or equivalent, which will demonstrate their ability to safely care by themselves for acutely ill patients 24 hours a day. These courses are denoted by an asterisk (*) throughout the course catalogue.
- "Back to the Classroom" selectives. Students must take one of the three following lecture/seminar format electives with accompanying Clinical Practice IV and Biomedical Informatics components:
PA06P: Advanced Clinical Pathology (October)
MD02P: Advanced Medical Pathophysiology and Therapeutics (February)
PH01P: Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (March)
Back to the Classroom selectives are NOT open to visiting students.
- Course codes consist of a two-letter prefix, a sequence number, and a one-letter suffix. The prefix indicates the specialty and the suffix indicates the location of the elective. For example, AS01P is an elective in Anesthesiology at Presbyterian Hospital.
- Registration. The call numbers included in your registration packet are to be used to register for a specific course. The section numbers correspond to the month that the elective is offered. For example, a section number of 007 indicates the month of July. If the elective description denotes that you will need prior approval from the course director, you must submit a Permission to Enroll form. All independently-arranged preceptorships and research electives also require the submission of a Permission to Enroll form. Otherwise, you will be dropped from the course if you register for it.
- A double asterisk (**) denotes a course not satisfying the full-time requirement but which may be taken as supplementary.
- Specialties. No more than two months of electives in a particular specialty are permitted. Additional elective months in the specialty may be done in lieu of interview and vacation months. If you wish to complete three months of research plus one month of clinical work in the same specialty, credit will be given for two months. The other two months will replace your interview and vacation months. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Student Affairs prior to registration.
- Enrollment in electives at Bassett Healthcare must have prior approval from these hospitals before call-in registration. Contact the Office of Medical Education at the hospital at (800) 852-4566.
