| Description: |
This elective will provide experience in the areas of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacology, pharmacogenetics, drug and alcohol detox and pain management.
Appropriate drug use and monitoring principles will be emphasized.
Objectives: Following completion of this rotation, the student should be able to better interpret serum drug concentrations, dose drugs more appropriately based on sound pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles, apply drug therapy principles to disease states (which should include knowledge of specific therapeutic and toxic effect monitoring), and improve his/her overall approach to the use of drug therapy on a day-to-day basis.
Learning Experience: The student will be assigned individual consult patients to evaluate work-up and follow on a daily basis. These patients will also be reviewed daily with the pharmacy resident and the attending.
Clinical pharmacology rounds are held seven times per week. Therapeutic drug monitoring is correlated with the clinical setting, and the student has the opportunity to learn computer analysis techniques.
A syllabus is provided for use.
Short oral presentations of topics of interest will be assigned as they arise.
Formal lectures in the areas involved (generally two per week) are also incorporated into this elective.
All work is done at MIBH. |
