Description: Daily attendance and participation in OTO/HNS, ward rounds, conferences and lectures. This clinical clerkship is offered to fourth year students in modules of one month. Since our department shares a residency training program with NYPH-Cornell Center, two weeks will be spent at each site.
Objectives: Observation of and participation in Otolaryngological and Head and Neck Surgery.
Learning Experience: The student will learn basic clinical skills in Otolaryngology. Patients will be assigned to students for workup.
Evaluation: Will be based on a consensus of all faculty members involved in the student's education in this course. By special arrangement the elective may be modified to emphasize ambulatory, pediatric otolaryngology, or facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Faculty: Attending staff and residents.
 
OT90P Research in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery
All interested Columbia P&S students MUST have approval from the course director for this elective.

Description: This elective provides an opportunity for the 4th year P&S student to participate in basic science and clinical research projects in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.
Objectives: The student will acquire an in-depth understanding of clinical or basic science research methodology through the hands-on experience in Otology/Neurotology, Head & Neck Surgery, Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Rhinology, Laryngology, Audiology/Speech-Language-Voice Pathology or Pediatric Otolaryngology.

Feedback and Evaluation: The assigned preceptor will provide frequent feedback throughout the research rotation, and an individual evaluation of the student will be done by both the research preceptor and the course director at the end of the rotation

OT20C Clinical Otolaryngology

Site/Location: Bassett Hospital, One Atwell Rd., Cooperstown NY, Medical Education Office
Description: This elective provides experience for acquiring basic diagnostic skills, and management of otolaryngologic diseases.
Objectives: Students will become familiar with the basic head and neck examination including examination of the ear, cranial nerves, mirror and fiberoptic examination of the pharynx and larynx. The student will become familiar with radiologic and invasive diagnostic procedures of this specialty. Diagnosis of head and neck cancer, as well as management of common otolaryngologic diseases, will be acquired.
Learning Experience: Students will participate in the evaluation of patients in the ENT outpatient clinic, as well as being introduced to the basic audiologic and audiovestibular assessment of patients with labyrinthine diseases. The student will participate in inpatient rounds and consultations, and opportunities for preoperative patient evaluation and operative assisting are provided.
