Objective: To be exposed to a subspecialty practice, both to learn about the subspecialty and also to observe an academic orthopaedic practice.
Learning Experience: The student will participate in the private office, subspecialty clinic, and operating room. The emphasis is on adult reconstructive surgery, with secondary focus in orthopaedic trauma. Attendance at, and participation in, multiple weekly conferences is included. Involvement in emergency care is included as well.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on preparedness for daily activities and also be invited to give a brief oral presentation. |

Learning Experience: Participate in the evaluation and care in patients in the private office, subspecialty clinic, and operating room. Participate in pre-operative indications conferences to understand when to operate as well as how to operate. Participate in postoperative conference to evaluate the operative management of patients.
Feedback and Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on a number of objective and subjective factors including but not limited to: oral presentation skills, preparation for operative cases including fund of knowledge with respect to anatomy, ability to show growth in the area of developing treatment plans for patients, and interpersonal relationships with their peers, the health care "team" including nurses, residents, and the attendings.
Students will deliver an oral presentation at the conclusion of the elective on a topic provided.
Suggestions will be made to overcome deficiencies in knowledge. An opportunity to perform basic skills in microsurgery laboratory is offered. |

Objectives: This is a 4-week intensive exposure to the pre-, peri- and post-operative care for the adult reconstruction patient. Goals for the course include, but are not limited to, developing an understanding of the indications for hip and knee replacement surgery and a better understanding of contemporary controversies within hip and knee surgery.
Learning Experience: The student will attend weekly Hip and Knee Conference, and present 12 minute "topic of interest" to the group via PowerPoint presentation. Students will spend 1 or 2 week blocks with each of four full time surgeons who are part of the Center for Hip and Knee Replacement (CHKR) at Columbia: William Macaulay, Ohannes Nercessian, Jeffrey Geller, and Howard Kiernan (for 4 weeks). |

Gain familiarity with the comprehensive spinal examination and interpretation of diagnostic imaging studies. Gain an understanding of nonoperative treatment as well as operative indications.
Participate in surgical procedures and in the care of postoperative patients. Participate in postoperative conference to evaluate the operative management of patients.
Feedback and Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on a number of objective and subjective factors including but not limited to: oral presentation skills, patient evaluation skills, preparation for operative cases, ability to show growth in the area of developing treatment plans for patients, and enthusiasm and interpersonal relationships with members of the spine team. Students will be expected to give concise patient presentations as well as presentations of selected topics throughout the rotation.

Objectives: To provide the student with an exposure to the surgical methods of treatment of orthopaedic problems.
Emphasis is placed on intraoperative teaching. Students will follow patients during their hospital stay, and assist in pre- and postoperative care.
Correlation between the clinical symptoms and physical findings and intraoperative pathology are stressed.
Learning Experience: The Bassett Hospital has a busy trauma service and provides care for a large rheumatoid population. In addition, many sports and farm injuries are treated. The operative experience includes fracture surgery, total joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery, and spinal surgery, in addition to basic orthopaedic disorders. |

Objectives: To provide an experience in musculoskeletal injuries and diseases which would be common to any physician's office.
The students will be primarily based in a clinic arrangement and accompany the attending orthopaedist to the Emergency Room as indicated.
The experience would be in physical diagnosis and treatment of fractures, tendinitis, bursitis, knee, ankle, and ligament injuries.
Hands-on experience of cast application, splinting, interarticular injection, and radiologist correlation for physical diagnosis would be emphasized. |

| Description: |
Objective: The Clerkship provides extensive exposure to the specialty of Orthopaedic Surgery. The student is given an opportunity to work on one of the busiest orthopaedic services in New York City as an important member of the orthopaedic team.
Learning Experience: The student will be an integral part of the service. He or she is expected to become proficient in orthopaedic physical examinations and the principles of orthopaedic care. Students will share responsibilities with the residents under the direct supervision of both the chief residents and the attendings.
The student will be expected to participate actively in the operating room, the general orthopaedic and specialty orthopaedic clinics and will attend conferences on a daily basis. All students will have daily access to the attending staff and the student will be evaluated on the basis of his or her knowledge and overall performance on the rotation. Evaluations will be by both the attending and resident staff. Night call is flexible, but taking call every third night will provide valuable experience on a busy trauma service.
Exposure to foot and ankle, shoulder, spine, sports medicine and total joint replacement is available.
The operating room experience is extensive as 60-70 operative procedures a week are done at the two sites. Students will be encouraged to spend half of their time at the St. Luke's site with an emphasis on trauma and very large orthopaedic clinics and half of the rotation will be at the Roosevelt site with an emphasis on more elective surgery, arthroscopy and sports medicine.
The student will have daily access to the director of the department as needed and is truly considered an important member of the team in every way. Individual interests can be discussed prior to the elective.
Feedback: Continuous throughout the elective.
Evaluation: Each student will be evaluated at the end of the elective period by our faculty.
In addition, the student is asked for his/her evaluation of the program. |
