Description: The elective provides training in the recognition and management of general infectious diseases, particularly in hospitalized patients with infections.
Objective: To develop an approach to the patient with fever, to recognize common infectious diseases, to learn to interpret and use laboratory information appropriately, to understand the principles of antibiotic selection.
Learning Experience: Under the supervision of one of our fellows, the student performs the initial evaluation of the inpatient consultation and follows the patient daily, writing chart notes to maintain communication between the consultation service and the patient's primary physician. Consultation rounds are made five days a week with the consultation attending and the fellows. Two conferences a week are held by the Division, attendance by the students is strongly encouraged.
Feedback: During and after consultation rounds.
Evaluation: On the basis of daily performance.

IN02P Clinical Infectious Diseases–Pediatric Section

Description:

Objectives:  The elective is designed to provide experience in diagnosing and treating common infections and infectious diseases in both out-patient and hospitalized infants and children.  The students are a significant part of a consultation service in which they participate actively in diagnosis and in planning the care of patients.  They will: attend daily attending rounds; present at least 1 new patient per day; follow 2-4 patients and write notes daily; attend outpatient clinic twice during the electives (e.g. HIV, TB, ID); prepare presentation of ID topic and present to team; and attend daily conference twice weekly. 
Learning Experience: Students make daily rounds on their own and with an attending, provide contact between the laboratories and the patients and are responsible for the Infectious Diseases notes on patient charts whenever such notes are indicated.  Laboratory experience in the Children’s Hospital bacteriology, the virology and serology laboratories is part of the elective.  More time in the laboratory can be arranged if desired when the demands of the service permit.  Students will be expected to attend relevant pediatrics rounds and the joint rounds held weekly with the medical infectious diseases section. 
Feedback:
Through daily rounds and informal session with attendings. 
Evaluation:
On basis of daily performance. A written evaluation will be submitted to the Dean’s office at the end of the elective.  Research opportunities, both clinical and bench are available.

Description: This elective is an inpatient-oriented experience which emphasizes evaluation and treatment of patients with infectious diseases.
Objectives: The elective is designed to teach the student an approach to clinical infectious diseases, antibiotic use, clinical correlation of microbiology data and infection control principles.
Learning Experience: Under the supervision of the attending staff, the student performs the initial inpatient consultations and continues to follow the patients throughout their hospital course.

Rotation Schedule M-F 8am-5pm
Description: Provides experience in the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of infectious diseases.
Objectives: The student will learn to integrate patient's historical, physical and laboratory data to develop an appropriate diagnostic and management plan.
Learning Experience: The students will work with the medical residents and fellows in infectious disease on the consultation service. Daily rounds will be made with the consultation attending.  Outpatient experience and teaching is done in the Infectious Disease Clinic.  The student will be expected to be actively involved in patient care.  Weekly formal conferences include: infectious disease conference, journal club, intercity ID rounds. A formal lecture is also given every third week.  Weekly tutorial sessions with the student will be given on various topics in infectious diseases.
Feedback and Evaluation: The final evaluation will be based on the student's daily participation on the consultation service and at conferences. The formal evaluation will be discussed with the student at the end of the elective.

Description: Provides education in diagnosis and management of infectious disease in the setting of an in-patient hospital consultation service.
Objective: The student will learn the basic principles of infectious diseases with emphasis on anatomic as well as microbiologic diagnosis and judicious use of antimicrobial therapy applicable to any field of clinical practice.
Learning Experience: Working closely with an infectious disease attending and infectious disease fellow, the student will prepare and present on daily attending rounds new consults and follow-up data involving patients on any adult medical or surgical service in the hospital. The student will be expected to attend weekly infectious disease conferences, at the St. Luke's site, and will be encouraged to present a case for discussion at one of the clinical conferences.  A Journal Club is held on alternating Wednesdays. The student will accompany the fellow to Inter-City Infectious Disease Rounds on Monday afternoons, 4 to 6 PM. Suggested reading list is provided.
Evaluation: Based on judgement of the infectious diseases attending with input from the fellow and resident as appropriate.  No night call.

Description: Provides clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of Infectious Diseases.  Strong emphasis is placed on utilization and integration of the clinical microbiology laboratory into the learning experience.
Objectives: The student will learn to integrate history, physical examination and laboratory database in order to arrive at an appropriate diagnostic evaluation and develop a comprehensive management program.
Learning Experience: Students will work under the direct supervision of a Senior Medical Resident and Infectious Diseases Fellow on the I.D. Service in performing Infectious Diseases consultations.  Daily Attending Rounds will be held and the student is expected to participate actively in patient care.  Formal conferences include weekly Infectious Diseases conferences on Thursday 9-10:30 A.M., Journal Club on alternating Wednesdays, and Intercity Infectious Diseases Rounds (Mondays 4-6 P.M.).
Feedback: Continuous throughout the elective.
Evaluation: The student will be informed of his/her progress on a day-to-day basis and a formal evaluation will be given at the end of the elective. This course will be conducted at the St. Luke's Hospital Site, Clark Building, 7th Floor.

Description:

This elective provides experience in the in-patient and ambulatory management of a wide range of infectious disease problems.
Objectives:
The student will develop a sound clinical understanding of infectious disease problems, in the context of thoroughness of history taking and physical examination, understanding of pathophysiologic principles, and integration of laboratory and ancillary information.  The student will learn to develop a management plan appropriate to the clinical needs of the patient, and to effectively utilize ongoing data and analysis to make relevant modifications in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Learning Experience:
The student will work under the aegis of the attending infectious disease physicians and in concert with the resident physicians assigned to that
rotation.  Students will make in­patient rounds and will be actively involved in clinical assessment and diagnostic and therapeutic planning.  The student will have the opportunity for direct involvement in relevant laboratory techniques and will become proficient in the principles and practices of such techniques.  In concert with the resident and attending staff, students will see patients in infectious disease consultation.  They will also be involved in the assessment, care, and management of ambulatory patients with infectious disease problems in the Ambulatory Care Center of the Stamford Hospital, and in the offices of the attending staff.  Students will attend daily Morning Report, Noon Conferences, Medical Grand Rounds, and Chief of Service Rounds.  They will play an active and participatory role in the Infectious Disease Conferences, and will be called upon to present and discuss topics relevant to their clinical experiences. 
Feedback:
Continuous throughout the elective. 
Evaluation:
The final evaluation will be based upon the student's performance at all levels of activity on this rotation.  Clinical skills, assimilation of new knowledge, work ethic, humanistic qualities, and overall specialty proficiency will be important criteria of evaluation.  This evaluation will be constructively discussed with the student at the completion of the rotation.  In addition, the student will be given regular and ongoing feedback throughout the rotation.
