| Description: |
Objectives: This elective will provide exposure to clinical activities and clinical research in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplantation. The elective may be taken in one of the subspecialties (Hematology, Oncology, or BMT) or split equally among each of the three clinical services.
Learning Experience: The students will participate in all activities of the Division(s), including outpatient/clinic sessions and inpatient care with the Fellow and the Attending on service. If the students elect to rotate through the three subspecialties, the elective course typically involves: 1) two weeks of outpatient sessions in hematology, oncology and BMT, with hematology in-patient service 3 days/week; 2) one week of oncology in-patient; and 3) one-week of BMT in-patient. The students will be taught to recognize major hematological and oncologic conditions in pediatrics and learn to apply modern diagnostic procedures and utilization of multi-modal therapy at an interdisciplinary level. The students will receive orientation in the treatment of genetically determined anemias, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia major, management of congenital and acquired disorders in hemostasis and thrombosis, multi-modal therapy of childhood malignancies (leukemias, lymphomas and solid tumors), as well as gain experience in the science and therapeutic application of stem cell transplantation. The students will be encouraged to study and present specific cases at the Pediatric Hematology conference, Pediatric BMT Conference, and/or Pediatric Oncology Conference which are all held weekly. In addition to clinical rounds, the students will attend all weekly conferences including teaching conferences, Pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT seminars, Radiology conferences, Tumor Board, and bone marrow interpretation teaching sessions. If they chose to be, the students may be exposed to the research activities of the Division(s). The orientation of the rotation, however, is mainly clinical.

First Monday of the month, 8:00 AM |
| Site/Location: |
Stamford Hospital, Stamford, CT, Bennett Cancer Center |
| Description: |
This elective provides experience in the in-patient and ambulatory management of the spectrum of disorders seen in Clinical Hematology and Oncology.
Objectives: The student will develop an in-depth understanding of a broad range of clinical problems seen in both Hematology and Oncology. Sound principles of clinical practice are incorporated into the educational process and include thoroughness of history taking and physical examination, understanding of pathophysiologic principles, and integration of laboratory and ancillary information. The student will be exposed to the latest diagnostic modalities and will learn to develop a management plan appropriate to the clinical needs of the patient. The student will additionally learn to effectively utilize ongoing data and analysis to make relevant modifications in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Because the Stamford Hospital is intimately involved with other major cancer centers and research protocols, the oncologic portion of the experience will expose the student to the latest in research and therapeutic options and modalities.
Learning Experience: The student will work under the aegis of the attending physician staff of the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center. These physicians comprise the clinical sections of Hematology and Oncology of the Stamford Hospital and oversee the consultative and comprehensive needs of a large spectrum of patients under their care. Students will make in-patient rounds and will be actively involved in clinical assessment and diagnostic and therapeutic planning. The student will have the opportunity for directive involvement in relevant laboratory techniques, and will become proficient in the principles and practices of such techniques. In concert with the resident and attending staff, students will see patients in Hematology and Oncology consultation. They will also be involved in the assessment, care, and management of ambulatory patients in the Bennett Cancer Center. Students will attend daily Morning Report, Noon Conferences, Medical Grand Rounds, and Chief of Service Rounds. They will play an active and participatory role in both the Hematology and Oncology Conferences and several multi-disciplinary tumor boards, and will be called upon to present and discuss topics relevant to their clinical experiences.
Feedback: Evaluation will be constructively discussed with the student at the completion of the rotation. In addition, the student will be given regular and ongoing feedback through the rotation.
Evaluation: The final evaluation will be based upon the student's performance at all levels of active on this rotation. Clinical skills, assimilation of new knowledge, work ethic, humanistic qualities, and overall specialty proficiency will be important criteria of evaluation.
Faculty: Drs. Michael H. Bar, Neil S. Cohen, Salvatore A. Del Prete, Robert B. Erichson, K. M. Steve Lo, Anne Angevine, Isidore Tepler, and Paul L. Weinstein. |
