MARY I. BASSETT HOSPITAL

CR20C Clinical Cardiology
THIS ELECTIVE IS NOT OPEN TO VISITING STUDENTS.
Columbia P&S students must have prior approval from the Office of Medical Education, (888) 547-6349.
Course Director: Dr. Rosemary Thomas
Course Coordinator: Leann Smith, (888) 547-6349, leann.smith@bassett.org
Given: All year, housing is provided.
Maximum: 1 student per month
Start Date/Time: First weekday of the month, 8:30 AM
Site/Location: Bassett Hospital, One Atwell Rd., Cooperstown NY, Medical Education Office
Description: The student will participate in the daily activities of the cardiac inpatient service as well as in cardiology consultations involving mostly inpatients plus some selected outpatients, including follow-up visits when appropriate. Clinical evaluation will be correlated with a variety of diagnostic procedures. These may include electrocardiography, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, standard and pharmacologic stress testing, cardiac radionucleide imaging, cardiac catheterization or other diagnostic procedures. This will provide the student with opportunities for familiarization with cardiac diagnostic tests and their indications and for comparison of these studies with clinical data. The student will also participate in supervised ECG interpretation sessions.
Objectives: At the end of the rotation the student should be able to elicit a more specific and pertinent history and be better trained in the cardiac physical examination. The student should be adept at the interpretation of the basic ECG including arrhythmia and other major abnormalities. Familiarization with a variety of cardiac diagnostic studies will enable the student to understand their use in the evaluation of cardiac problems.
Learning Experience: The student will participate in consultations (mostly inpatients) and present the cases to a cardiology attending who will review all the primary cardiac data and the formulation with the student, who will then write the consultation note. The student will participate in follow-up rounds (or clinic visits) since this often provides additional learning experience. The student will be expected to read selected cardiology references for general background. Interactive computer learning programs for EKG's interpretation and for cardiac physical diagnosis are available. The student will be encouraged to become familiar with the indications for and to observe other major cardiology activities including exercise or pharmacologic stress exercise EKG, echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, and cardiac rehabilitation. If a student has a strong interest in a particular area of cardiology, the program may be modified to accommodate this.

CR51L Clinical Cardiology
Course Director: Dr. Eyal Herzog, (212) 523-3916, eherzog@chpnet.org
Coordinator: Ms. LaToya Selby, (212) 523-3916, lselby@chpnet.orgs
Given: All year
Maximum: 4 students per month
Start Date/Time: First day of the month, 8:00 AM
Site/Location: St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center, St. Lukes Hospital, 1111 Amsterdam Ave.,
Cardiac Care Unit, 6th Floor, Babcock Building
Description: Objectives: The practice of clinical cardiology requires skills beyond the history and physical or the variety of procedures; optimal treatment rests on the skill of integrating these seemingly disparate types of information. This elective will provide a background in the diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan for patients with cardiovascular approach based on such an integrated approach.
Learning Experience: Students will accompany the Cardiology Critical Care Team (attending, fellow, residents, and interns) and learn to participate in the evaluation, decision-making and management. The students are expected to be self-motivated and possess skills required for them to feel comfortable speaking with patients, performing physical examinations and reading charts. At the end of the month, the students should understand these standard tests sufficiently to explain them to their patients in general terms, at least with respect to the rationale and logistics. More importantly, the student should understand the importance of integrating into meaningful assessments of patients and their medical conditions as the basis for formulating treatment plans.
Feedback: Continuous on a daily basis.
Evaluation: Student evaluation will be based on a consensus of all faculty members involved in the student's education in this course.
Course Logistics (Student's Responsibilities): The course administrator will provide the student with the names of the fellow and the attending for the month. The fellow is the primary person to contact to determine clinical activities for the day. The student is expected to attend all the activities of the Cardiac Care Unit services, including any activities described by the attending cardiologist as part of the daily division of cardiology conference. It is the student's responsibility to make sure that he/she interacts with the attending according to his/her preferences, but in such a way that the attending is able to evaluate his/her performance at the end of the month. Failure to do so will make it impossible for us to indicate that the student has completed the rotation, and will prevent him/her from passing.
