The Program

The McKeen program  provides evaluation and drug and alcohol detoxification in an upscale in-patient setting. We specialize in treating patients with complications, such as addiction withdrawal problems that have resisted standard therapies, diagnoses that remain uncertain despite prior evaluation, repeated treatment failures, or comorbid psychiatric or physical disorder, including cognitive problems.

The treatment team includes experienced board certified addiction psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and nurses with a diverse set of expertise. Each patient is under the personal care of a senior attending psychiatrist who coordinates all aspects of evaluation and treatment. Psychologists and psychiatrists with substance abuse expertise provide daily individual and group therapy as well as meeting with families. When needed, patients have full access to experts in every field of medicine. Twelve-step meetings are available on hospital grounds.

The average length of stay is usually under 1 week, though we have no artificial limit requiring inappropriately rapid discharge. The attending psychiatrist maintains contact with the referring physicians who may expect a full report of each patient's hospitalization, with copies of relevant test and consultation reports when their patients are discharged.

The Setting

The McKeen Pavilion is a private, luxury medical-surgical unit with fifty-eight single bed rooms on the top floor of the hospital. Each room has sweeping views of the Hudson River or of New York City. The cuisine is prepared by a separate kitchen, which also serves a restaurant available to patients, guests, and families. A high tea is provided each afternoon in the atrium. The rooms are comfortably large with appropriate furnishings, and there is a concierge who is available to assist with travel and other bookings. Internet access is available, as are VCRs and a videotape library. Patients may, when appropriate, be permitted to attend outside activities during their stays. This is particularly useful for patients being referred to outpatient treatment programs which require intake visits. The highest standards of privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.

For whom is The McKeen Pavilion suitable?

The McKeen Pavilion is an open, unlocked general medical and surgical floor. It is appropriate for patients who are able to cooperate fully in all aspects of their care. For those patients unable to make that commitment, the hospital provides a traditional inpatient psychiatric unit. Patients may transfer to the McKeen unit when and if their condition permits.
