The Columbia Department of Psychiatry has many programs, which provide treatment for psychiatric disorders. Treatment is provided for adults, children, teenagers, and the elderly. A wide range of diagnoses are treated.Â
Types of treatment provided include:
Individual therapy, group therapy, medication management ( psychopharmacology ), group therapy, cognitive remediation, psychiatric rehabilitation, comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, consultations, psychiatric evaluation, substance detoxification, and other modalities of treatment. Urgent psychiatric care is provided through our Intensive Outpatient Program. Neuropsychiatry services are provided, including psychological testing (neuropsychological testing). ECT (electroconvulsive treatment , electroconvulsive therapy) is also available, as is vagus nerve stimulation treatment (VNS). Detoxification (inpatient detox, outpatient detox) are available, including buprenorphine treatment. Light therapy ( phototherapy, bright light therapy ) of depression and other conditions such as seasonal affective disorder is available.
Diagnoses treated include:
- depression (major depression, treatment-resistant depression, chronic depression, dysthymic disorder, dysthymia, seasonal affective disorder [SAD])
- bipolar disorder (manic depressive illness, bipolar disorder, bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder)
- schizophrenia (chronic schizophrenia, paranoid schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder)
- substance abuse (alcohol abuse, alcohol dependence, alcoholism, cocaine abuse, marijuana abuse, heroin addiction, pill addiction, opiate dependency, Vicodin abuse, detoxification, withdrawal), comorbid psychiatric and substance abuse, dual diagnosis
- anxiety disorders (including panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder [OCD], posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]), eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder)
- personality disorders (borderline personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder).
- Memory impairment
Childhood and adolescent disorders, including:
- Autism, Aspberger's syndrome, developmental delay, pervasive developmental delay
- Attention deficit disorder (ADD), Attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD), hyperactivity
- anxiety and depression, phobias, school phobia, school avoidance, learning problems, parent-child problems, behavioral problems
Location:
Columbia Psychiatry Clinical Programs are located in New York City, in both midtown Manhattan and in upper Manhattan. The midtown location is at 16 East 60th St. (East Side, midtown Manhattan). The upper Manhattan location is on the campus of NY Presbyterian Hospital, and many of these services are located at 160 Ft. Washington Ave. (between 165th and 166th St.). Physicians and other staff are members of the Department of Psychiatry of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (Columbia Department of Psychiatry), New York, N.Y., U.S.A., and the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
