"Cultivating humanism has become a major priority for the medical community and for society. Many think that medicine is too disease-oriented and technology-driven and neglects the human dimensions of illness and healing. To change this perception and the reality behind it, we must find ways to permeate each and every aspect of medicine with humanism."

The Steve Miller Medical Education Day at Columbia University was held on October 28, 2011 spotlighting excellence in medical education and the integration of the practice of humanism in medicine with a day offering Grand Rounds, a workshop and student project presentations.
The New York Academy of Medicine joined us to present the 7th Annual "Steven Z. Miller Lecture on Humanism in Medicine Sponsored by the New York Academy of Medicine and The Arnold P. Gold Foundation," during Grand Rounds. The 2011 Lecturer was Lewis R. First, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, Pediatrics, Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, University of Vermont College of Medicine and Chief of Pediatrics, Children's Hospital at Fletcher Allen Health Care, who presented, "Thoughts on Humanistic Pediatric Leadership: Some 'First' Impressions after 17+ 'Fun Filled' Years as a Pediatric Department Chair and Child Advocate."
The lecture was followed by a workshop entitled, "Effective, Efficient and Innovative Teaching Techniques: That Could Make You “Teacher of the Year." Project presentations were given by the 2011 Steve Miller Fellowship Awardees followed by a luncheon.
Our goal is to foster a community that continues Steve's work both in humanism in medicine and medical education. Steve devoted his energy to integrating these themes into his work and training of future generations of physicians.
Thank you for remembering Steve in a way that will perpetuate his spirit and legacy.
