A TYPICAL WORKDAY FOR RESIDENTS A typical workday for residents integrates patient care with formal and informal teaching. The following outlines a day for the residents on the inpatient service. 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. AM Sign Out Rounds/Daily Work Rounds on the inpatient service are supervised by the senior residents. The focus of discussion is patient progress and management plans. Other members of the team include interns and medical students.
8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Daily Intake Rounds/Morning Conferences are attended by senior residents, residency director, and chief residents. New admissions and complicated cases are discussed with regard to diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Some mornings are dedicated to Board Review and Mystery Cases. On Wednesdays and Fridays, Chief of Service or Grand Rounds take place from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. for all residents and faculty. Thursdays are dedicated to learning the basics of Evidence-Based Medicine and Journal Clubs. 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Attending Rounds are conducted at the bedside on all inpatient floors. The entire team, senior residents, interns, and medical students, discuss the admissions and ongoing patient care issues with the ward attendings. At CHONY we practice family-centered care, involving families in key decisions and medical interventions. In addition, the attendings conduct a didactic conference three times weekly. 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Radiology Rounds. This is a daily conference for residents, interns, and students assigned to the ward to discuss the radiologic studies on their patients with pediatric radiologists. 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. PM Sign Out Rounds
Weekly conferences are conducted by the faculty and chief residents. The following is a listing of the major weekly conferences you will attend during your residency training. Chief of Service Rounds: Case-based conferences using a format of presentation of a case and discussion with active participation of the housestaff. Faculty participants include different subspecialists, the ward attendings, and faculty from the Division of Pediatric Education. The senior residents each present one formal Chief of Service Round during the year. Grand Rounds: The pediatric faculty and guest lecturers speak on a variety of topics. State-of-the-art lectures are presented by local, national, and international authorities. Intern Conference: Weekly conference specifically for interns. The format ranges widely from history and physical findings, generation of a differential diagnosis to a discussion of a specific topic. Faculty sponsors include the faculty from the Division of Education and the chairman. Resident Conference: Didactic series of lectures on a wide variety of topics presented by many different members of the Department of Pediatrics. Journal Club: Review of recent articles of importance in pediatrics with particular attention to methodological and statistical analysis. Specifically oriented to the junior and senior residents, though all housestaff are invited to attend. |
