Pulmonology

The Pulmonary Division houses the Sarah E. Nash Children's Lung Center and Sue and John L. Weinberg Cystic Fibrosis Center. The Pediatric Pulmonary Division’s mission is to continue to be a leader in clinical care and research related to a wide variety of respiratory disorders including asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic neonatal lung disease (bronchopulmonary dysplasia), neuromuscular respiratory disorders and sleep disorders. Specialists in the Lung Center perform flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy. The pulmonary function laboratories are especially designed for children; the exercise physiology laboratory is one of the few in the Northeast capable of non-invasive measurement of heart and lung function during exercise in children. The Cystic Fibrosis Center, which is accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, has a long history of providing high quality clinical care for children and adults. The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Center is a full service Sleep Center with a state of the art sleep laboratory devoted exclusively to children.

The Division is actively involved in research funded by the National Institute of Health, the Cystic Fibrosis foundation and other foundations and philanthropy.

Current research activities include efforts to understand why children develop asthma, testing of methods for early identification of asthma problems and interventions to improve asthma outcome. Our Cystic Fibrosis Center has been designated as a Therapeutics Development Center for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation whose mission is to evaluate novel therapies. Other Cystic Fibrosis related research includes the evaluation and treatment of infectious disease complications of Cystic Fibrosis with a particular focus on infants diagnosed by newborn screening. Research in sleep is aimed at identifying risk factors for sleep problems, studying circadian rhythms and evaluating methods to improve sleep in children.

Our physicians evaluate outpatients at the Children's Lung Center at the Children's Hospital of New York, on the Columbia campus of the New York Presbyterian Hospital in upper Manhattan, five minutes from the George Washington Bridge as well as at Columbia Eastside in Midtown Manhattan. There are outreach offices in Mt. Kisco, NY; Summit, NJ; and Englewood NJ. Pulmonary function testing for children is available in each of those offices. We are available for consultation on children admitted to Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, NY, Englewood Hospital, Englewood NJ and Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. Our physicians have been listed in New York Magazine on "Best Doctors in New York" and in the books "Best Doctors in the Metropolitan area" and "Best Doctors in America."
