General Pediatrics

Columbia University offers an exciting 2-year fellowship program in general academic pediatrics, with a focus on urban community health.   The Primary Care Clinician Research Fellowship in Community Health is a collaborative effort of the Divisions of General Pediatrics, Medicine and Family Medicine, the Mailman School of Public Health and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Fellowship positions are available for July 2009.

The fellowship entails:

  1. advanced training in the clinical practice and teaching of primary care in an urban, underserved community in New York City
  2. pursuit of a Master’s degree in Public Health or a Masters of Science in Epidemiology  at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health; and
  3. advanced training in research skills including completion of research projects and a publishable manuscript(s) in urban community health

The Division of General Pediatrics has a well-established network of primary care practices in the community staffed by faculty and residents.  Fellows will join one of our pediatric practices where they will manage a panel of patients and precept residents and medical students.  The Division of General Pediatrics also has an innovative curriculum to train pediatric residents in community health, cultural competence and advocacy.   Fellows will actively participate in these community pediatrics projects.  Through these clinical, teaching and community experiences, fellows will gain a contextual understanding of the factors affecting the health of urban, underserved children.   Through the coursework in the School of Public Health, the fellowship core curriculum shared with General Pediatrics, Medicine and Family Medicine and mentoring by a researcher in one of the three divisions, fellows will gain the analytic skills needed to examine community health issues in a rigorous, academic manner, and learn how to implement and evaluate solutions to some of these problems.  Fellows will be expected to prepare their work for presentation at regional or national meetings.  The fellowship is a 2-year program, however, applicants with relevant experience may enter the second year.

The Health Resource Service Administration (HRSA) funds the fellowship.   Federal guidelines restrict the fellowship to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.   Recent residency graduates can expect compensation close to $56,000 plus full coverage of the tuition fees at the School of Public Health.   We are particularly interested in receiving applications from underrepresented minorities.

Positions are available for July 2009. The deadline for submission is October 15, 2008.

Questions should be directed to the Melissa Stockwell MD, MPH Co-Program Director: mss2112@columbia.edu.  Interested candidates should submit a one page personal statement - no more than 500 words - expressing career goals and research interests, a Curriculum Vitae and 2 letters of reference to:
