Emergency Medicine
Ways to Give Back
The aim of our subspecialty training program in the Division of Emergency Medicine is to constantly improve both the quality of care we provide our patients and the methods we use to assess and treat the conditions unique to infants, children, and adolescents. We do this through an intense training program for junior pediatric faculty in the emergency setting at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital under the expertise of senior faculty who have pioneered less-invasive ways of treating patients combined with empathy and compassion for our patients and their families.
However, the pace of our division's ability to provide treatment and programming and to engage in pioneering research is directly related to the availability of extra funds donated to our program. Funding medical advances cannot be done through traditional patient-care revenue streams. Though the Division successfully competes for coveted NIH grants and has received funding from influential foundations, exploratory research is not usually funded without the private philanthropy from individual grateful parents and friends.
Indeed, support for the beginning phase of scientific inquiry is required for young investigators to season their work so they may later apply for NIH and industry-related grants and contracts. Such focused funding rarely offers the flexibility needed for the kind of risk-taking and freedom of exploration that is essential to formulate truly groundbreaking research.
We hope that you will continue to, or begin to, partner with us and help support our program so that we can continue to embrace Columbia University's College of Physician and Surgeons' motto to "Discover, Educate, Care and Lead."
On behalf of the Division and, most importantly, from the infants, children and adolescents that we evaluate and treat, I would like to thank you in advance for your ongoing support.
