Pediatric and Perinatal Pathology

The Pediatric and Perinatal Pathology Unit of the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology focuses on the study of the placenta, fetus, and neonate. We perform a thorough gross and microscopic examination with emphasis on recognizing congenital anomalies, infections, and other maternal/fetal conditions that may lead to adverse perinatal outcomes such as preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, or pregnancy loss. Additionally, we facilitate performance of special studies, including microbiology cultures, genetic testing, and metabolic evaluation. It is our goal to provide accurate diagnostic information that could impact the therapeutic care of both the mother and the infant as well as the mother's future pregnancies.

Diseases encountered in infancy, childhood, and young adulthood also fall under the realm of pediatric pathology. Our unit has many experienced pathologists, including a board-certified pediatric pathologist, with expertise in diagnosing neoplastic and non-neoplastic pediatric diseases in every organ system. We participate in multidisciplinary conferences in oncologic and non-oncologic diseases, support programs for tumor registries of pediatric tumors, and work with clinical specialists to provide the best possible care for each child.
