Until the 1990s, virtually all medical research was done in men; doctors assumed the results would be identical for women. That turned out to be wrong. The more we learn about gender, the more we come to understand that males and females are significantly different in every system of the body.
The Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University is a unique collaboration between the private sector and academic medicine. It supports research and educational programs devoted to correcting our male models of human function and the pathophysiology of illness. It has a roster of scholars recruited from around the world who collaborate with international corporations in a partnership without walls.
Current and past supporters include Procter & Gamble, The Kellogg Foundation, the Bayer Corporation, Wyeth , Bristol-Myers Squibb, Kos Pharmaceuticals, Burson-Marsteller, CIGNA HealthCare, Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson, CVS/pharmacy, Meredith Publishing, the Sol Goldman Charitable Trust, the Gladys Brooks Foundation, MultiMedia HealthCare/Freedom, Krizia, AstraZeneca and Nike.
There are two levels of corporate support of the Partnership:
Corporate Supporter: $10,000 a year.
Benefits include:
Corporate Member: $100,000 a year.
Benefits include all of the above.
In addition, a corporate membership supports a unique project designed in collaboration with the Partnership. This may be, for example, an original research program, an educational program for the scientific and/or lay community, or a series of appearances by one or more of the Partnership Scholars. Scholars are available for consultation and/or teaching at or on behalf of the corporation on a topic of mutual interest.
