Ten Years with Center for Gender Medicine: Past, present and future

Following the opening inauguration by H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden, Dr. Legato delivered the keynote speech at the 10th anniversary jubilee for the Center for Gender Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Asked to address the development of gender medicine in the world, Dr. Legato discussed the ethical, moral and legal considerations that have arisen in the genomic era and the growing importance of examining these issues while keeping up with the quickening pace of scientific achievement in the 21st century.

Other topics were addressed by renowned doctors, scientists and other dignitaries from all parts of the world including, but not limited to, Marek Glezerman, fromthe Rabin Medical Center in Tel Aviv, Israel; Virginia Miller from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and Noel Bairey Merz from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Roadmap for Addressing Sex Differences in Pain Management

 As part of its effort to bring cutting edge research on gender-specific medical research to the public, Women in World Neuroscience of the International Brain Research Organization convened a meeting at Barnard College, bringing together the top medical scientists in the field of pain research. Dr. Legato moderated a panel focusing on the neural mechanisms of pain perception and addressing sex differences in pain management. An open discussion regarding the implications of gender-specific research followed.

 Panelists included Josephine Briggs, MD, National Institute of Health; Saralyn Mark, MD, SolaMed Solutions; Jeffrey Mogil, MD, McGill University; Richard Smiley, MD, Columbia University Medical Center; and Debora Spar, Ph.D, Barnard College.

Sex-specific Reporting of Scientific Research: A Workshop in Washington D.C.

 In response to a request from The Office of Research on Women’s Health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) conducted a seminar regarding the lack of data in female human and animal subjects in scientific literature.  The forum focused on the lack of sex-specific reporting of scientific results and the potential barriers and unintended consequences this brings. Four panels were conducted consecutively.

 Dr. Legato participated in a panel session, “Experiences of Journal Editors Implementing Editorial Policies “ moderated by Floyd Bloom, M.D. of the Scripps Research Institute. Dr. Legato is the founding editor of Gender Medicine, a journal devoted entirely to reporting the differences in the normal function and response to disease between males and females.

 Other panelists included Frank Davidoff, M.D., MACP, Executive Editor, Institute for Healthcare Improvement; Editor Emeritus, Annals of Internal Medicine; Interim Chief Executive Officer, Physicians for Human Rights; Jerome P. Kassirer, M.D., Distinguished Professor, Tufts University School of Medicine; Visiting Professor, Department of Medicine, Stanford University; Former Editor-in-Chief, New England Journal of Medicine; and Member, Workshop Planning Committee; and Barnett S. Kramer, M.D., M.P.H., Editor-in-Chief, Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Organization for the Study of Sex Differences (OSSD) and The International Society of Gender Medicine (IGM) will hold a joint meeting in Baltimore, Maryland from June7-9, 2012. Dr. Legato was recently invited to be the keynote speaker and will address the general topic of "The Future of and Ethics of Sex-based Medicine.” The Keynote address is scheduled for Thursday, June 7 from 4-5:00pm.

We are pleased to announce the inaugural Marianne J. Legato Research Scholar Award in Gender-Specific Medicine.

Due to a very generous philanthropic grant, we have granted two awards to faculty in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University for research in gender-specific medicine. The awardees are Doctor Jonathan T. Lu, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology and Dr. Jon T. Giles, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology.

Dr. Lu will be working on gender-specific stem cell models of a congenital illness (Congenital Long QT Syndrome) that predisposes the patient to cardiac arrhythmias. He will test the impact of sex hormones on the properties of those cells and will make this ground-breaking population of stem cells available to the general scientific community.

Dr. Giles plans to assess gender differences in tissue inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease.. He intends to explore the contribution of adipose tissue inflammation in the pathophysiology of these illnesses. dots

Dr. Legato is now a medical advisor for Prevention Magazine.

As a Prevention editorial board advisor, Dr. Legato will be featured in various Prevention Magazine articles.

The Fifth Congress of Gender-Specific Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel

November 30th-December 8th, 2010

The Fifth International Congress on Gender Medicine provided a platform on which 40 eminent scholars from many medical disciplines met to present their data on the impact of gender on their specialties. The latest research was discussed and debates on crucial topics were conducted by eminent clinicians and scientists. During the Congress, the new bylaws of the International Society for Gender Medicine were ratified.

Dr. Legato was the honorary president and keynote lecturer for this event. The title of her address was “Gender and the Genome: A Complex and Evolving Tale.”

Festival della Scienza in Genova, Italy

November 1, 2010

Dr. Legato wrote the preface to the book “Il Fattore X,” which was presented and featured at the Festival della Scienze. She gave an address on topics related to gender-specific medicine to an audience of scholars, scientists, and the lay public.

20th Anniversary Celebration of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland

Dr. Legato was honored by the Office of Women’s Health at the National Institute of Health led by Dr. Vivian Pinn. The Office celebrated its 20th anniversary on September 27, 2010, in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Legato was a co-editor of a comprehensive report on the state of women’s health issued by that office entitled “Beyond Hunt Valley: Research on Women’s Health for the 21st Century.”

The FDA Office of Women’s Health (OWH) is responsible for protecting and advancing the health of women through policy, science, and outreach. The office supports research to enhance the understanding of sex related biological differences and their implications for FDA regulated projects. Dr. Legato was the keynote speaker for this event and gave a presentation entitled “Gender and the Genome: A Complicated and Still-Unfolding Tale.”

Stanford University School of Medicine Symposium “Beyond X and Y: The Basic and Translational Science of Sex Differences” at the Stanford Campus in Palo Alto, California

June 11, 2010

The symposium addressed the basic and translational science behind sex differences. The purpose of the symposium was to encourage basic and translational scientists to consider the role of sex differences in every aspect of their research, from stem cells to clinical practice, with the hope that basic research can be translated to the whole population. Dr. Legato was the keynote speaker for the symposium and gave a presentation entitled “From Gender to Genomics: Achievements and Challenges in Sex-Specific Science.”

February, 2011

The Canadian Institute of Health Research is Canada’s national health research agency. Its mandate is to excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system. This will be the second international review of CIHR since the organization was established in June 2000.

Dr. Legato was an expert reviewer for the Institute of Gender and Health at this event.

“Frontiers in Women’s Health: The Role of Hormones in Aging and Disease-What We Know (and Don’t Know) Eight Years After the Women’s Health Initiative” Conference at the University of California San Francisco/UC Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, California

Date: February 25, 2011

Dr. Legato was the keynote speaker at this conference. She discussed the history of gender-specific medicine and its relevance to the new advances in genomic science and synthetic biology. She emphasized the need for legal, moral and theological debate about the most responsible way to use our new and rapidly expanding powers to alter the nature of living things.

The American Group Psychotherapy Association is a multi-disciplinary organization with a national and international membership of approximately 3,000 mental health professionals who are psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, marriage, and family therapists and other mental health practitioners who provide group psychotherapy services in a variety of settings.

Nationally as well as internationally, the AGPA Conference is regarded as the most significant conference in the field of group psychotherapy. Dr. Legato was the keynote speaker and gave the conference opening plenary address, discussing for over 500 enthusiastic attendees the differences in the characteristics of the male and female brain.
