Annual Freddie Awards Honor Health and Medical Filmmakers


Dr. Legato and David Bowman present the Freddie Award to the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

New York, N.Y., Nov. 10-11, 2000 - Time Inc. Health held its annual International Health and Medical Film Festival, honoring filmmakers in 35 categories with “Freddie Awards.” The event, which consisted of a health symposium, a twilight reception and the awards ceremony, took place at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. The categories included: Adolescent Health, Advertising, Allergies & Asthma, Alzheimer's, Arthritis/Inflammatory Diseases, Basic & Clinical Science, Behavioral Diseases, Children's Health, Communications, Community Health, Coping, Dentistry, Diabetes, Fitness/Wellness, Geriatrics, Health Education, Health Series, HIV/AIDS, Infectious Diseases, Integrative Health, Issues & Ethics, Men's Health, Nutrition, Oncology, Osteoporosis/Muscle & Bone Conditions, Patient Care, Prevention, Public Relations/PSAs, Safety and First Aid, Special People, Stroke & Heart Disease, Surgery, Web Sites, Women's Health (20 - 50), and Women's Health (over 50).

Dr. Marianne J. Legato, professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and founder and director of the Partnership for Women’s Health at Columbia, presented the Freddie Award for Osteoporosis/Muscle & Bone Conditions with David Bowman of Procter & Gamble to www.nof.org, National Osteoporosis Foundation, Washington DC. The National Osteoporosis Foundation is the leading nonprofit, voluntary health organization dedicated to promoting lifelong bone health in order to reduce the widespread prevalence of osteoporosis and associated fractures, while working to find a cure for the disease through programs of research, education and advocacy.

Dr. Legato’s film, "Shattering the Myths: Women and Heart Disease” won first prize in the category of Women's Health at the 1995 International Health and Medical Film Festival.

The Partnership for Women’s Health at Columbia University is the first collaboration between academia and the private sector dedicated to advancing the study and practical use of the differences in the normal human physiology of men and women and how they experience disease.
