Welcome to the Columbia University Orthopedic Residency Website.

As Chairman, I am pleased to welcome you to our website. Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital have a rich tradition in orthopedic surgery dating back to 1866 when the New York Orthopedic Dispensary opened its doors. Since that time, we have grown into a preeminent institution for quality patient care, research, and education. Many of the leaders in orthopedic surgery throughout the United States and abroad have trained here at Columbia.

Our residency program continues to train leaders and we are proud to have comprehensive facilities and a dedicated cadre of research and teaching faculty. Our residents spend the majority of their time at the Columbia Presbyterian Campus of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in northern Manhattan and also rotate at the University of Maryland /Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore Maryland. Our away rotation in Baltimore gives our residents rich experience in level 1 trauma and spine surgery; an excellent complement to our regular level 2 adult and level 1 Pediatric experience at home.

Our residents all participate in a wide variety of research projects. Every year, residents are given the opportunity to present these projects at national meetings. Our clinical research is often done in close collaborations with the Columbia University School of Public Health and with other clinical departments. Some residents undertake basic science research through the Columbia Center for Orthopedic Research (COR).

I encourage you to ask questions and discuss the program with our current residents. Finally, I hope this website allows you to gain some valuable information concerning our program and we look forward to meeting you in the future. We encourage 4th year students to spend a month on our service - if you are interested, please contact the office of student affairs at 212-305-3806 or visit http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/ps/electives.

Sincerely,

Louis U. Bigliani, MD
