Dr. Christopher Ahmad’s “Pediatric and Adolescent Sports Injuries” Monograph receives 4-Star Review from Doody’s Publisher Review Service.
[REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION]
Mark R Hutchinson, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
*Description**
The 43rd entry in a monograph series from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, this book covers pediatric and adolescent sports injuries from the spine to the knee, elbow, and shoulder.
**Purpose**
It is intended to serve as a key source of current information for orthopedic surgeons, residents, fellows, sports medicine specialists, primary care physicians, and allied healthcare professionals who manage adolescent and pediatric athletes. While there are numerous articles on issues in young athletes, there are relatively few books that take a comprehensive approach. This monograph does a nice job while bringing the reader current information.
**Audience**
The editor, Christopher Ahmad, has brought together an impressive group of contributors. Most of the 12 chapters are authored by a leader in the field with the assistance of a resident or fellow. This format not only provides an opportunity for an up-and-coming professional interested in the field, it also keeps the book targeted at an appropriate level. It is very readable and covers the topics well.
**Features**
This monograph does a wonderful job of bringing readers up to date on the broad gamut of pediatric sports injuries. While each chapter is anatomically focused, the focus is on the background, diagnosis, and treatment of the most common disease. The high quality figures and the breadth and currency of the references make this monograph a great first stop when studying and evaluating sports injuries in kids.
**Assessment**
This 200-page monograph is a concise, efficient, yet thorough up-to-date look at the most common sports injuries that effect young athletes. It should be available to all residents and fellows in training as a great first reference to these problems and it serves a great review to keep orthopedic or primary care sports medicine practitioners up to date on key issues in skeletally immature athletes.

Drs. Christopher Ahmad, Louis Bigliani and
William Levine are currently performing Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement
surgery on a number of patients who previously would not have had any
other options. The FDA approved the Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement in 2004,
after nearly 15 years of use in Europe . This procedure is for patients with: 1)
massive rotator cuff tear and arthritis with inability to raise arm above the
horizontal ("pseudoparalysis"), 2) painful joint replacement following complex
fracture of the proximal humerus, 3) failed joint replacement with massive
rotator cuff tear. The majority of our patients who have had the procedure now
can raise their arm above the horizontal and have significant improvement in
quality of life, pain relief, and overall function
