It can be stressful and overwhelming for a family to discover their baby may have a fetal anomaly or genetic syndrome. You may wonder what the next step should be and where they should go for advice. We are here to help, every step of the way.

Upon suspicion of diagnosis of a birth defect, you or your referring physician can call The Center at 1-877-THE-BABY to schedule a consultation. A counselor will work with the you:
• to acquire medical records
• answer questions
• provide support
• help determine what specialist you need to see
• schedule and coordinate all subspecialty appointments for you
• coordinate, verify, provide insurance coverage for each subspecialty

Our Care Coordinator will help ease any anxieties and provided compassionate, individualized attention. Our goal is to set all appointments for the same day in order to minimize the number of trips for our patients.

Depending on the diagnosis, you may need to consult a specialist. The following are specialists we partner with as well as an overview of procedures they handle:

Subspecialty Appointments
Prenatal Diagnostic Procedures: Amniocentesis and any other relevant procedures such as CVS and PUBS.
Fetal Therapy: Medical and surgical procedures for the fetus.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine: These obstetricians take care of high-risk pregnancies and specialize in prenatal ultrasound.
Genetics: Medical geneticist and genetic counselors will talk to you about the cause of the birth defect, your family history and what to do in your next pregnancy.
Neonatology: Pediatricians take care of babies who need extra attention and need to be in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after birth.  If you are giving birth at Columbia, you will be able to tour the labor and delivery floor and the NICU. Take our virtual tour online.
Pediatric Surgery: Pediatric surgeons specialize in routine and complex pediatric surgical procedures.
Pediatric Cardiology: Cardiology Pediatricians specialize in conditions that affect the fetal hearts.
Pediatric Neurology: Neurology Pediatricians specialize in the brain.
Pediatric Urology: These specialist specialize in conditions that affect kidneys and the bladder.
Pediatric Orthopedics: Pediatricians who specialize in defect related to the skeleton, bones and spine.
Psychiatry and Social Services: Psychiatrists and social workers worker with families coping with their prenatal diagnosis.
