From the Directors
The Fibroid Center of New York at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is committed to helping women in need of specialized treatment for uterine myomas. Myomas are the most common tumor to afflict the female pelvis. They are also the most frequently cited indication used for performing a hysterectomy in this country. Many of these surgeries are done unnecessarily. At our center, we specialize in the myriad of ways that myoma can be treated. We offer both medical and minimally invasive treatments for this condition. When more advanced surgery is the best option, our surgeons have extensive surgical experience to make sure that your outcome is the best possible.
Fibroids frequently occur along with other pelvic conditions. Our physicians specialize in the minimally invasive treatment of all types of gynecologic disorders, including abnormal uterine bleeding, chronic pelvic pain from endometriosis and other causes, pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. Using advanced minimally invasive procedures, pelvic rehabilitation, as well as time-tested surgical procedures, our specialists are able to tailor the treatment to the specific needs of the patient.
Our team of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and registered nurses all have specialized training in advanced gynecologic surgery, urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery. We offer over one hundred years of combined experience to provide a more secure path to diagnosis and appropriate treatment. In addition, as part of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, we work closely with other specialist in areas including, interventional radiology, colorectal surgery, urology, gastroenterology, neurology, and orthopedics to assure a multi-disciplinary approach to our patient's problems.
Our team of surgeons has advanced training and skills in both laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures. We are one of the few institutions in New York performing advanced laparoscopic procedure including laparoscopic myomectomies, total laparoscopic hysterectomies and laparoscopic colposuspensions for urinary incontinence. Because of the innovations in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries used by our surgeons, large abdominal incisions, which prolong the time of recovery and result in greater post-operative discomfort, are rarely used.
As part of one of the nation's leading academic institutes, the Fibroid Center of New York is involved in numerous areas of innovative research so that we may continue to improve the care provided to our patients. Combining cutting-edge technology with years of surgical and therapeutic experience leads to superior results for our patients. In addition, as part of Columbia University, we provide the type of advanced training that attracts the top residents and fellows to our department.
As the directors of the Fibroid Center of New York, we are delighted to introduce you to our services and encourage you to contact us for more information.
