Academic Regalia

Bachelor’s & Master’s Degree Candidates – Please note that Bachelor’s students will wear their White Coat to the CUSON Graduation Ceremony, and only need to purchase a Bachelor’s regalia (cap & gown) if planning to attend the Morningside University Commencement ceremony. Bachelor’s and Master’s candidates at Columbia University and its affiliated institutions wear a cap (mortarboard) with tassel and gown. No hood is worn. Bachelor’s and Master’s degree candidates purchase souvenir student regalia (the gowns are yours to keep) and you do not need to pre-order your gown. There are two ways to receive your regalia:

Go to the Morningside Bookstore: Regalia will be available for pickup beginning March 12th through Commencement Day. Pre-ordering is not necessary for Bachelor’s and Master’s gowns. Gowns can be picked up until Commencement day (though students are encouraged to pick up your regalia early).
Out-of-town students can have their gown shipped to them (for a fee) through April 30th by faxing a “Bachelors and Masters 2013 Order Form” to the Morningside Bookstore. Orders must be placed by April 1st to avoid late fees for expedited processing. The form and details are available at http://www.columbiabookstore.com/

Doctoral Degree Candidates – Doctoral graduates wear a velvet tam, a gown, and hood. Doctoral gowns and hoods can be rented or purchased, and the velvet tam must be purchased. Students will need to indicate which program they are graduating from when ordering regalia since this determines the color of the hood:

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - standard PhD blue hoods
Doctor of Nursing Science (DNSc) - apricot hoods with orange cord lining
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) - apricot hoods with green cord lining

Doctoral candidates have two ways to receive your regalia:

Attend either the Morningside or CUMC Grad Fair to be measured for your gown.

Gown Rental - Doctoral students that chose to RENT a gown can be measured for their gown at either Grad Fair, but will have to pick up their gown at the Morningside Bookstore after May 9th. Rental gowns must be returned to the Bookstore by June 4th.
Gown Purchase - Doctoral students that chose to PURCHASE a gown can be measured for their gown at either Grad Fair. Orders must be placed by April 1st to avoid late fees for expedited processing. Students can either pick up their regalia in the Morningside Bookstore, or request to have their gown shipped to them (shipping requests must be submitted by April 30th).

Complete a “Doctoral 2013 Order Form” and fax to the Morningside Bookstore. Students should place orders by April 1 to avoid late fees for expedited processing. The form and details are available at http://www.columbiabookstore.com/. Regalia will be available for pickup at the Morningside Bookstore from May 9th through Commencement Day. Shipping is available for a fee up until April 30th. Rental gowns must be returned to the Bookstore by June 4th.

Bachelors for purchase (cap/gown/tassel) = $50
Masters for purchase (cap/gown/tassel) = $57
Doctoral, full rental = $169 (plus tax) (rental gown, rental hood, purchase tam)
Doctoral, full purchase = $863 (plus tax) (purchase gown, purchase hood, purchase tam)
Note: Doctoral tams (caps) are not available for rent due to health considerations.

BOOKSTORE GRAD FAIRS

To assist you with your graduation needs, there will be Grad Fairs held on both the Morningside and Medical Center campuses. Please note that Bachelor’s and Master’s souvenir gowns are available for immediate pick up only at the Morningside bookstore (not the Medical campus bookstore). Master’s students (and Bachelor’s if you plan to attend University Commencement) are encouraged to attend the Morningside bookstore Grad Fair to purchase regalia.

Columbia University Morningside Bookstore Grad Fair: March 12 – March 14
Location: Morningside Campus, 2922 Broadway at 115th Street, Lerner Hall
Hours: 10am – 7pm
Master’s and Bachelor’s degree candidates may purchase and take home regalia at this fair. Doctoral candidates will be measured and may place orders for regalia.

CUMC Audubon Bookstore (Barnes & Noble) Grad Fair: March 15
