The Usability Lab is a facility for performing usability testing and is located at the first floor of Georgian Building. It is a convenient resource for many kinds of usability activities such as focus groups, task analysis, and heuristic evaluation. The usability laboratory provides a computer with usability testing software, Morae (TechSmith). The computer is equipped with Web camera with built-in microphone (Logitech QuickCam Pro 400) to capture video and audio of the user’s interaction with the system. The computer has an internet access and is connected to a printer.
The usability room is also equipped with furniture including table and chairs and used for a patient interview or focus group interview.
Dreamweaver is a web development tool, enabling users to design, develop and maintain standards-based websites and applications. It provides easy movement between the HTML code view and the design or layout view. Dreamweaver includes a variety of basic and advanced features for web publishing:
- Editing pages visually and through html source.
- Quick and easy visual table editing.
- Dragging and dropping images, tables, and flash movies.
- Automated repetitive tasks.
- Easy import and optimization of html files created by Microsoft Word.
- Ability to configure it to html preferences for common tags.
- Creating macros to save web creation process for future uses.
Morae records real-world actions, such as user speech and facial expressions, along with detailed application and computer system data to give an view into the way that software and Web sites are seen and experienced.
Morae comprises three components: Morae Recorder, which collects test data; Morae Remote Viewer, which observes and annotates test data real-time over a network; and, Morae Manager, which analyzes captured data and assembles relevant pieces into a presentation.
The Morae Recorder automatically annotates collected data indicating Web page changes, mouse clicks, keystrokes, text data appearing on screen, and window events such as opening and closing applications. To capture video and audio of the test participant, Web camera and microphone are connected to the test participant's computer.
The Remote Viewer connects to Recorder over a network and displays the full experience, including the test participant's screen, their audio comments, and video of their face. Each Remote Viewer observer can set markers and add text notes which are communicated back to the Recorder and saved with the recording file.
The Morae Manager software is installed on the system where test data eventually will be collected, analyzed and refined into a presentation highlighting the test results. Additionally, the Manager component includes integrated editing functionality, making it quick and easy to assemble the important video clips and share them with stakeholders.
NVivo is a program for qualitative data analysis that allows to import and code textual data, edit the text ; retrieve, review and recode coded data; search for combinations of words in the text or patterns in coding; and import or export data from and to quantitative analysis software.
As well as qualitative data analysis, NVivo can be used to support research project management and literature reviews; to share data and coding with students, supervisors, co-researchers and participants over the internal network or the Web. It is especially useful with large data sets, or when you may wish to return to data for re-analysis.
The specific features of NVivo include:
- Import, create and edit rich text documents. Code or annotate any text.
- Link project documents to pictures, video and websites.
- Show, search and assess relationships of text, coding and attributes.
- Create graphical models which are linked live to your data.
SPSS 13.0 is a software package used for conducting statistical analyses, manipulating data, and generating tables and graphs that summarize data. Statistical analyses range from basic descriptive statistics, such as averages and frequencies, to advanced inferential statistics, such as regression models, analysis of variance, and factor analysis. SPSS also contains several tools for manipulating data, including functions for recoding data and computing new variables as well as merging and aggregating datasets. SPSS also has a number of ways to summarize and display data in the form of tables and graphs.
Visio 2003 is a diagramming program that can help create diagrams to document and organize complex ideas, processes, and systems. Visio can be used to quickly create a wide rage of drawings: building blueprints, street maps, project timelines, program flowcharts, network diagrams, data flow and process flow diagrams, etc. Visio 2003 also automates data visualization by synchronizing directly with data sources to provide up-to-date diagrams.
The Center maintains a database of instruments for research. There are 160 instruments in the database which are arranged by the title of the instrument, author and contact information, number of questions, availability of paper-based and/or electronic copy. The instrument database is available for the faculty and students of school of nursing.
