Nurse anesthetists have been providing anesthesia care to patients in the United States for nearly 150 years. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are anesthesia professionals who safely administer approximately 30 million anesthetics to patients each year in the United States, according to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists' (AANA) 2007 Practice Profile Survey.

The Nurse Anesthesia Program was started at Roosevelt Hospital in 1965 and has been an integral part of the Health Science Campus of Columbia University since 1979 and has always maintained full accreditation. At Columbia University School of Nursing core and shared science courses are integrated into the nurse anesthesia specialty. With a combined experience of over 30 years the faculty gives special attention to each student. Every student is assigned a nurse anesthesia faculty mentor who offers guidance throughout the program.
