The Center
for Interdisciplinary Research on Antimicrobial
Resistance (CIRAR) hosted a closed forum for
industry representatives in the field of antimicrobial
therapeutics and diagnostics. This half-day forum, which
included over 40 attendees, provided
opportunity to discuss perspectives of the gaps in research
related to antimicrobial resistance and potential areas for
collaboration among industry and academia. The
forum also served as a venue to network, discuss common problems,
interests, challenges, and, ultimately, lead to potential research
projects and collaborative work.
Specific Aims of the CIRAR Forum for
Industry Representatives in the Field of Antimicrobial
Therapeutics and Diagnostics were:
|
1. |
To bring industry
and CIRAR together to discuss the gaps in research related to
antimicrobial resistance and potential areas for
collaboration. |
|
2. |
To identify
barriers to the development of effective antimicrobial agents
active against drug resistant pathogens and ways to overcome
these challenges. |
|
3. |
To discuss the
impact of multidrug resistance from the perspective of
industry, academic health centers, and the community at large. |
|
4. |
To analyze the
impact of rapid detection of antimicrobial resistance on
patient management and therapeutic outcomes. |
|
5. |
To develop ideas
for potential research projects and interface between industry
and CIRAR. |

INDUSTRY
FORUM - PANEL TOPICS
Diagnostics Panel:

What do you perceive as barriers to
meeting the goal of developing and implementing real-time detection of
resistant & virulent pathogens?

What are the major clinical, financial
and societal challenges that could be addressed by interdisciplinary
outcome studies?

How can CIRAR assist industry in
addressing regulatory barriers that hinder the implementation of new
technologies?

Since research and development
resources are limited, what are innovative ways for academia and
industry to work together in research?

How can CIRAR and industry partner to
meet our shared objectives?
Therapeutics Panel:

The antibiotics pipeline and challenges
from industry’s perspective.

Novel approaches to
treatment/colonization.

Opportunities for academia/industry and
what are the barriers.
