Antimicrobial Diagnostics and Therapeutics

February 15, 2006

Panel Topics  |

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (CIRAR) hosted a closed forum for industry representatives in the field of antimicrobial therapeutics and diagnostics.  This half-day forum, which included over 40 attendees, provided opportunity to discuss perspectives of the gaps in research related to antimicrobial resistance and potential areas for collaboration among industry and academia.  The forum also served as a venue to network, discuss common problems, interests, challenges, and, ultimately, lead to potential research projects and collaborative work.

Specific Aims of the CIRAR Forum for Industry Representatives in the Field of Antimicrobial Therapeutics and Diagnostics were:

1. To bring industry and CIRAR together to discuss the gaps in research related to antimicrobial resistance and potential areas for collaboration.
2. To identify barriers to the development of effective antimicrobial agents active against drug resistant pathogens and ways to overcome these challenges.
3. To discuss the impact of multidrug resistance from the perspective of industry, academic health centers, and the community at large.
4. To analyze the impact of rapid detection of antimicrobial resistance on patient management and therapeutic outcomes.
5. To develop ideas for potential research projects and interface between industry and CIRAR.

Panel I - Diagnostics Industry Panel

Dr. Elaine Larson, CIRAR Director, prefaced the forum with a presentation of the background and history of CIRAR.  Download her presentation.

CIRAR Executive Committee Member, Dr. Phyllis Della-Latta, Director of Clinical Microbiology Service (left), offers presentation on "Bridging Academic and Industrial Gaps."  Download the presentation.

Dr. Phyllis Della-Latta leads the panel of industry experts on diagnostics (right) in a stimulating discussion of barriers and opportunities in interdisciplinary work between industry and academia in the field of antimicrobial resistance.

Diagnostics Panel members included Mary Motyl (Merck & Co, Inc), Vivian Jonas-Taggart (Gen-Probe), Stephen Day (Third Wave Molecular Diagnostics), Nadine Sullivan (TREK Dx), Christine Borjesson (AB Biodisk), Jane Hata (BioMerieux, Inc.), John Meduri (Becton Dickinson), Barry Kreiswirth (International Center for Public Health), David Perlin (International Center for Public Health), and Alan Evangelista (Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc.).

Panel II - Therapeutics Industry Panel

Christine Kubin, PharmD, BCPS, Clinical Pharmacist, Infectious Diseases at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, prefaced and led the Therapeutics Industry Panel.  Download her presentation.

Steven J. Projan, Ph.D., Vice President, Biological Technologies, Wyeth Research, and member of the Therapeutics Industry Panel (left), speaks on the barriers to antibacterial drug development.  Download the presentation.

Seth Hetherington, Vice President of Clinical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer of Inhibitex, Inc., and member of the Therapeutics Industry Panel (right), gives presentation on "Antibody Approaches to Infectious Diseases: Clinical Programs at Inhibitex."  Download the presentation.

Charles Knirsch, Senior Medical Director, Anti-Infectives, Pfizer and member of the Therapeutics Industry Panel (left), presents on "Opportunities and Obstacles in Academic-Industry Collaborations."  Download the presentation.

CIRAR Expert Liaison, Dr. Scott Hammer (right), summarizes the key points of the forum, focusing on identified barriers to and opportunities available through interdisciplinary collaboration between industry and academia.

INDUSTRY FORUM - PANEL TOPICS

Diagnostics Panel:

What do you perceive as barriers to meeting the goal of developing and implementing real-time detection of resistant & virulent pathogens?

What are the major clinical, financial and societal challenges that could be addressed by interdisciplinary outcome studies?

How can CIRAR assist industry in addressing regulatory barriers that hinder the implementation of new technologies?

Since research and development resources are limited, what are innovative ways for academia and industry to work together in research?

How can CIRAR and industry partner to meet our shared objectives?

Therapeutics Panel:

The antibiotics pipeline and challenges from industry’s perspective.

Novel approaches to treatment/colonization.

Opportunities for academia/industry and what are the barriers.
